Marvel Studios has their Joss Whedon. Warner Bros. has (had?) their Chris Nolan. And now Fox has their… Mark Millar!
Twentieth Century Fox has announced that comics name-brand Mark Millar has come aboard as creative consultant on the studio’s Marvel Comics superhero movies. Fox, of course, is in the X-Men, Wolverine and Fantastic Four business. (The studio's right to make Daredevil movies, however, is apparently lapsing next month and returning to Marvel Studios.)
What Happened to Fox's Daredevil Reboot?
Millar is well known by comics fans for books like The Ultimates, Civil War and Wolverine: Old Man Logan. He also is the founder of the creator-owned brand Millarworld, which has begotten the likes of his creations Wanted and Kick-Ass.
A studio press release says, "Millar will work with Fox on developing new avenues for its X-Men and Fantastic Four tentpoles." Fox production president Emma Watts adds that he "will be an invaluable resource to us and to our filmmakers as we look for fresh opportunities to innovate within our shared Marvel universe."
Hmmm. New avenues? Fresh opportunities to innovate within our shared Marvel universe. Listen folks, Fox has seen the future of their superhero movies and it's all about The Avengers. How long until we get an X-Men and FF crossover, with Millar offering that much-needed comics street cred to guide the way?
As for what kind of input Millar will have on the films currently in development, it's not quite clear. Hugh Jackman and James Mangold's The Wolverine began production over the summer, but Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class sequel, Days of Future Past, won't start shooting until this coming spring. And Josh Trank's Fantastic Four (once known as Fantastic Four Reborn but simply called Fantastic Four in today's press release) is probably happening in the latter half of 2013. So plenty of time still for Millar to get in on those latter two films.
“As someone who has spent his entire life obsessed with both comic-books and movies, this is essentially my dream gig as it's a unique combination of both,” stated Millar. “I spent ten years working at Marvel and am really happy with the work I did on the comic side of things so the idea of working with these characters now in a brand new medium is enormously exciting for me. I really like the Fox team, love this bold new direction they have for their franchises and am proud to be working alongside some of modern cinema's biggest talents. James Mangold is incredible, Matthew Vaughn's one of my closest pals and Josh Trank gave us, in my opinion, one of the greatest superhero movies of the last decade with Chronicle. The invitation to join this crew was maybe the coolest phone-call I've ever had.”
