How I Met Your Mother Soundtrack Coming in September

The creators of How I Met Your Mother have had a lot of fun with the sitcom form, jumping back and forth in time, setting up long term pay offs for jokes and, of course, putting a central mystery element in their show not usually associated with the genre. And then there’s been the songs…

While not a musical series, per se, there sure have been a lot of reasons for the characters to break into song on the series, from pop star alter egos to imaginary sequences to running jokes. And these moments have been some of the best and funniest in the show's history.

With How I Met Your Mother going into Season 8 this fall, talks are underway between the producers and the network about a possible Season 9 – something CBS’s president Nina Tassler said she was ”very optimistic” about earlier today. And while that’s still to be decided, one thing we did learn tonight at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour was that a How I Met Your Mother soundtrack is finally coming!

Said HIMYM’s co-creator, Craig Thomas, “We’ve been asked by the fans for years, ‘When is the How I Met Your Mother soundtrack album going to come out?’ We’ve sort of had talks about it, but never quite made it happen. But finally, we decided look, it could be the last year of the show – we don’t know. It could be more. But we decided now is the time to do it. We complied everything. It’s like 20 tracks. It is totally an album. It’s 40 minutes of music. And we said this is the year. So on our premiere night [September 24th], the How I Met Your Mother soundtrack album will go up on iTunes. It’s iTunes only. It’s not a physical CD, because that’s so 1992! When’s the last time you bought a CD? We’re working on it as we speak.”

Thomas confirmed that yes, the album would include such beloved parts of HIMYM history as all three Robin Sparkles songs and Barney’s Awesome Video Resume song and then revealed, “We’re going to do a fully produced version of the ‘Bang-Bang-Bangity-Bang’ song [from Season 5’s “Of Course”] - The cast and our composer. Perhaps with a slight New Orleans theme!”

Thomas said that when it came to a title for the album, “I think we’re going to call it How I Met Your Music. It’s a thing!”
