Warner Bros Confirms Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot

Warner Bros. has revealed some new details about the Mortal Kombat movie reboot, suggesting that the new adaptation is already in production.

According to WorstPreviews, Warner Bros executive Lance Sloan confirmed that the film was being developed, as well as its director and budget.

We're preparing right now for the film with Kevin Tancharoen, [who] directed the digital series for us. He's at the helm of the forty, fifty million dollar film.

“We're preparing right now for the film with Kevin Tancharoen, [who] directed the digital series for us," said Sloan. "He's at the helm of the forty, fifty million dollar film."

The series he's referring to is Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which debuted on YouTube in April 2011. Aside from this, Tancharoen's other directorial efforts include the remake of Fame, Glee: The 3D Concert Movie and The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll. Sooo....yeah. Fingers crossed that he draws on resources from Legacy rather than his earlier batch of work when making the movie?

In terms of the proposed plot for the reboot, nothing has been confirmed, but rumours are swirling it'll follow a supermarket employee who discovers he has otherworldly powers and must make the ultimate choice between fighting for the side of good or evil.

The original Mortal Kombat film appeared in 1995 and was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. This in turn spawned a sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997, which performed poorly at the box office in comparison to its predecessor. As a result a planned third film, Mortal Kombat: Devastation, was shelved indefinitely until Warner Bros. picked up the rights to Midway's assets in 2009 following the game studio going bankrupt.

FOX Nabs New Comedy Series from Ted Trio

Deadline is reporting that FOX has bought a new live-action comedy series, with a put pilot commitment, to be written/executive produced by Ted co-writers Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild and executive produced by Ted co-writer/director/star Seth MacFarlane.

Yes, the minds behind the biggest comedy hit of the summer ($408 million worldwide) are working up a series about two successful guys in their 30s who have their lives turned upside down when their nightmare dads unexpectedly move in with them.  MacFarlane, of course is most famous for creating and starring in FOX's Family Guy, where Sulkin and Wild have also written and produced for years.

DICE: Mirror's Edge and Bad Company Are "Too Good to Kill"

While EA and DICE remain coy about Mirror's Edge 2, a sequel seems all but inevitable.

In an interview with IGN, DICE executive producer Patrick Bach continued EA's (as well as DICE'spro-Mirror's Edge 2 messaging, staring that Mirror's Edge is a property "we love, and of course we haven't killed it, because it's too good to kill." This also applies to Battlefield: Bad Company 3.

“The Bad Company IP is still something we love," Bach continued, "and it’s very dear to me because I worked on both titles. We have no information with where we are to a sequel to Bad Company, so I can’t tell you anything about that IP." When asked about the uncertain future of the Bad Company franchise, particularly with Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 taking center stage for the developer's foreseeable future, Bach emphasized that DICE will "never kill something that's great."

This reinforces an earlier DICE statement: "We haven't killed Bad Company 3." We may not see it now, but it sounds like its return is also inevitable.

"And then of course," Bach continued, "we have other projects in store for you." Is DICE working on an original new game? Another sequel? "You’ll just have to wait and see."

Jimmy Fallon in Talks to Host the Oscars

Jimmy Fallon is now in negotiations to host the 85th Annual Academy Awards, with Saturday Night Live's Lorne Michaels -- who's also an executive producer on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon -- producing.

According to the Los Angeles Times, who broke the story, ABC has already raised objections to having the late-night talk show host from rival NBC play emcee on its Oscar broadcast. However, according to insiders close to the discussions, the Disney-owned network has no power to veto the decision, should a deal go through with the Academy. Meanwhile, an academy spokeswoman denied that any talks with Fallon and Michaels were even taking place.

Nevertheless, despite ABC's reluctance to showcase Fallon in their awards show, the Late Night comedian has plenty of hosting experience on his resume. Fallon also fronted the 2010 Emmys, which was very positively received.

But what are your thoughts on Fallon hosting the Oscars? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Starz's Incursion is "Band of Brothers Meets Halo"

With Spartacus wrapping up on Starz next year, executive producer and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight is in development on his follow-up project, Incursion. Again teaming with Starz, DeKnight is crafting a story about an intergalactic war, in Starz's first sci-fi series.

Today, at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, Starz’ president, Chris Albrech, gave an update on the project, saying DeKnight had just returned from Hawaii, where he shot a short proof-of-concept reel for Incursion, to give the network an idea on how the series would look and feel.

Albrech said the series was very big and ambitious, describing it as “Band of Brothers meets Halo.”

I spoke to DeKnight about Incursion at Comic-Con, and you can check out what he had to say about the series, and its season-to-season format, below.

Ryan Murphy Reveals the New Title for American Horror Story: Season 2

Co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy has announced the title of the next chapter for FX's American Horror Story - American Horror Story: Asylum.

"When we launched the show last year, we kept quiet about the closed-ended nature of the show because we didn't want to tip off the audience that the characters were not going to survive," said Murphy. "Now that it has been established that each year is a closed-ended story, the time seemed right to reveal what we’re calling the new installment.

"We picked 'Asylum' because it not only describes the setting -- an insane asylum run by Jessica Lange's character which was formerly a tuberculosis ward -- but also signifies a place of haven for the unloved and the unwanted. This year's theme is about sanity and tackling real life horrors."

The new season stars Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Zachary Quinto, James Cromwell, and Joseph Fiennes. Production began in July. As previously reported, none of the returning cast members from Season 1 are playing the same characters.

American Horror Story: Asylum will premiere this fall in October on FX.

Television Critics Association Honors Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad

Tonight, the Television Critics Association (of which both IGN TV's Executive Editor Eric Goldman and I are members) recognized the top programs and actors of the 2011-2012 television season at its 28th Annual TCA Awards presentation. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston hosted the annual invitation-only event, held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in conjunction with the TCA’s summer press tour.

HBO's Game of Thrones captured (presumably with fire and blood) the top honor of "Program of the Year" while comedian Louis C.K. took home two awards; "Outstanding Achievement in Comedy" (for his series Louie) and "Individual Achievement in Comedy" (for his performance on the series).

Too bad there's no Individual Achievement in Douchebag.

Showtime's riveting counter-terrorism series Homeland also took home two awards - one for "Outstanding New Program" and one for lead Claire Danes in "Individual Achievement in Drama."  Meanwhile, Downton (Spanish flu induced?) fever wasn't just for last week's Emmy Award nominations as Masterpiece: Downton Abbey won the 2012 TCA Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials."

In the "Outstanding Achievement in Drama" category, AMC's Breaking Bad took the top prize while the classic Bostonian bar sitcom Cheers beat out nominees such as Twin Peaks and Lost to take home the Heritage Award.  Here is the full list:

  • Individual Achievement in Drama: Claire Danes (“Homeland,” Showtime)
  • Individual Achievement in Comedy: Louis C.K. (“Louie,” FX)
  • Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: “60 Minutes” (CBS)

Anthony Russo Talks Captain America 2

Earlier today at the TCA press tour, IGN TV's Eric Goldman spoke with former Community executive producer (and frequent Community director) Anthony Russo about what he and his brother Joe Russo have planned for Marvel's sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. First, we learned a bit about how the comedy duo was initially tapped to direct the upcoming comic book feature, as well as how Community was actually the launchpad for their recruitment.

"It sort of came out of the blue, but [Marvel] were big fans of Community," said Russo. "You can sort of draw a line between some things we did on Community and a Marvel movie. I think if you look at some of the big genre episodes -- you know, the paintball episodes, etc. -- there’s a cinematic sensibility being explored there that is in the language of those films."

Additionally, Russo noted that he and his brother's experience in television gave them a leg up with working in such an expansive franchise like The Avengers. "Marvel is a big company, and they’ve made a lot of movies. These narratives are connected to each other. That’s not typical for a feature film, but television people are used to that. There are seasons and seasons of a show, and the history is very important it, obviously... My brother and I were comic book geeks from a young age, and big fantasy geeks. We got to talk to [Marvel] in detail about that. They knew that we understood the brand and their characters really well. We were just incredibly passionate about the movie, and they felt that it was the right match."

While Russo wasn't allowed to divulge many details surrounding the Winter Soldier plot, he did describe some of his aspirations for the Steve Rogers character. "We’re trying to grow him as a character," he continued. "Certainly, he’s come a long way from where he started in World War II to where he is in modern-day America. So the character has room for growth because of that huge journey he’s been on, number one. Number two, the appeal of these movies is the ensemble. Captain America isn’t the only character in the film, and there are other characters that are perhaps lighter in nature."

Speaking of the ensemble, might we see any appearances from other Avengers, Peggy Carter or S.H.I.E.L.D. members? To that, Russo remained tight-lipped. "That’s something Marvel will shoot me for if I tell you," he joked.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier begins production early next year, with a release date set for April 4, 2014.
