LA Confidential could be getting a follow up. Deadline is reporting that James Ellroy, who wrote the novel upon which the acclaimed 1997 film was based, has written the script for the first episode of a potential TV series, which would serve as a sequel story. Details are scarce, though Deadline says it, “continues the themes and stories from L.A. Confidential.”
Ellroy and New Regency are currently shopping L.A. Confidential to broadcast networks, cable networks and “emerging distribution platforms,” says Deadline, with multiple interested parties. The goal is to get a straight-to-series commitment, bypassing the pilot stage.
If L.A. Confidential is picked up, it will be the second new period piece/L.A. crime series, following Frank Darabont’s upcoming Lost Angels on TNT.
The Academy Award-winning L.A. Confidential starred Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger, Danny De Vito and James Cromwell. It’s safe to assume any characters carried over into the new TV version (those that survived the film, that is) would be recast with new actors.
This would be the second attempt at an L.A. Confidential TV series. A pilot was shot in 2000 for FOX, with a cast that included Kiefer Sutherland in the Kevin Spacey role of Jack Vincennes, but it was not picked up to series. Ellroy had no involvement in that version, which was not a continuation of the film, but rather used the same characters in events set beforehand. It can be seen on the L.A. Confidential Blu-ray and DVD. (As an adoring fan of the film, let's just say I didn't cry about them not picking up that version of the series when I saw the pilot).
