The Thief reboot is being developed for both the PS3 and PS4, but the newer console's DualShock 4 controllers will provide a more immersive experience, a producer said.
In Thief, Garrett's visibility to enemies is shown via a light gem, which brightens and darkens when Garrett is visible or hidden, respectively. The light bar on the DualShock 4 controller will reflect the in-game light gem, offering players a more tangible indicator as they move through the game's environments. Stephane Roy producer at Eidos Montreal, said it creates a "nice feeling when you play in the dark."
Roy also said that the PS4 controller's touch pad allows for easier menu navigation and weapon selection, and "makes for a more intuitive way to perform various actions."
In a game about frequent improvisation, the DualShock 4 Share button will allow players to show others their experiences in different scenarios: how they eliminated a guard, how they snuck through a room unnoticed or how they used the environment to their advantage.
"We want to make sure players really feel like they’re Garrett, that they’re part of the environment," Roy told PlayStation Blog. "So on our side the immersion is key. And honestly, with the PS4, it’s just amazing to see how far we can push this immersion."
Thief releases February 25, 2014 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
