Is Guillermo del Toro Making a DC Supernatural Team-Up Movie?

He is. He isn't. Now maybe he is. Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has clarified those rumors about him doing a team-up film of DC's supernatural characters, a la the comic book series Justice League Dark.

Del Toro told io9, "I am talking to DC and Warners about tackling the 'Dark universe' characters, but we're not calling it [Heaven Sent]. I don't know where this title came from. We have a very concrete storyline that I'm proposing — but it's still very, very early days."

He said of the alleged lineup including the likes of Deadman, Swamp Thing, Constantine and Spectre, "They're great characters. I relate to them because they are supernatural monsters, first and foremost." But he stressed again that "it's way early days."

So let's just keep our hopes in check for the time being, fellow fanboys.

Modern Warfare 4 Rumor Debunked by Voice Actor

The voice actor who plays Captain Price has debunked rumors of a new Modern Warfare sequel. After reports last week that he claimed to be working on Modern Warfare 4, actor Bill Murray (no, not the Ghostbusters/Caddyshack Bill Murray) now says on Twitter that the report is “not accurate,” adding that he “told the guy I was doing a special new Modern Warfare for China, not MW4.”

Last week’s report suggested that Murray said “Yeah, on Monday I am off to meet Infinity Ward about the next game, Modern Warfare 4, I’m doing work on the sequel to Modern Warfare 3, it carries straight on and I only ever appear in the Modern Warfare games.” At the time, Infinity Ward simply commented “Interesting news today, but it’s not true. We’ve not talked with any voice actors, so all news is speculation.”

Murray is likely referring to Activision's partnership with Chinese publisher Tencent, which led to Call of Duty Online in Japan. Other previous Modern Warfare 4 rumors, including alleged information about new game modes and levels, remain unconfirmed.

Daniel Craig Wants More Dragon Tattoo With David Fincher

Although The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo only performed decently at the box office, rumors surrounding a follow-up have continued to circulate. While director David Fincher has been openly noncommittal about helming The Girl Who Played with Fire, Dragon Tattoo star Daniel Craig remains hopeful for the project. Moreover, he may persuade Fincher to return.

"Of course I'll embrace [the movie], especially if Fincher does it," Craig told the L.A. Times. "I'm definitely going to work on him."

The first film was well received by critics and fans of the original books, but Sony-MGM is still hesitant about moving forward on a sequel.

The film hasn't been ruled out completely, but the studio says that if they were to greenlight Fire, it would need to be made on a lower budget.

As of right now, Sony is currently waiting on a first draft of the screenplay, which is being written by Dragon Tattoo writer Steve Zaillian.

Will Fallout 4 Be Set in Boston?

Rumors suggest that Bethesda’s next Fallout game will take place in Boston. According to a thread posted by an anonymous Reddit user, scouting is currently underway at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “The rumors are true, Fallout 4 will take place in Boston,” the user writes. “In case you haven't heard, Bethesda has recently been scoping out and researching Boston. They also have a strong connection to MIT.” The user notes that he “may or may not be an MIT employee” but “that's really all I can say for fear of losing my job.”

The rumor makes sense considering the lore behind The Commonwealth, the Fallout universe’s version of Massachusetts that’s been referenced in prior games. In Fallout 3 side quest The Replicated Man, players encounter a scientist named Dr. Zimmer who comes from The Commonwealth, a “war-ravaged quagmire of violence and despair” where he notes he and his colleagues created androids that have escaped and are running wild. Zimmer also references The Institute, which is presumably a future version of MIT.

As noted by our friends over at Gamespy, The Commonwealth also contains the Railroad, which runs in direct opposition to the Institute and aims to rescue the androids that have been created. A branch of the Commonwealth Police known as the Synth Retention Bureau is in charge of capturing androids that have escaped from the Institute.

Bethesda has declined to comment on the rumor of a Boston setting for now, but considering the impressive amount of mythology already revolving around The Commonwealth, it certainly seems like a plausible theory.

Bethesda’s Fallout 3 was released in 2008 and took place in a war-ravaged version of Washington DC, with expansions adding Pittsburgh and Maryland. Follow-up Fallout: New Vegas was developed by Obsidian in 2010 and was set in a future version of Las Vegas.

OnLive Possibly Being Closed by End of Day

IGN is hearing rumors that OnLive may be shutting down as early as end of day today.

Brian Fargo from inXile says he received an email from an OnLive employee which read:

"I wanted to send a note that by the end of the day today, OnLive as an entity will no longer exist.  Unfortunately, my job and everyone else's was included.  A new company will be formed and the management of the company will be in contact with you about the current initiatives in place, including the titles that will remain on the service.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with you and I’m sure our path with cross again."

Mashable corroborates Fargo's email, saying "According to a source close to the situation, the company called an all hands meeting at 10am PDT, at which the entire staff was fired. Some staffers may be rehired as the company transitions to its next unknown iteration."

IGN has reached out to our sources at OnLive but have yet to receive confirmation.

We'll update with more information as we hear it.

Nokia, Microsoft Holding Windows Phone Event on September 5

You've heard the rumors, and now it's finally time to pin a date to the calendar at long last.

Nokia and Microsoft issued a joint invitation on Wednesday, inviting the press to what's most definitely a Windows Phone announcement going down in New York City on September 5.

While the familiar tiles on the invitation sent to Engadget leave little doubt that the two companies will be talking about Windows Phone, it's unclear at the moment if the conference will unveil new Windows Phone 8 handsets, which have been leaking nearly as much as the sixth-generation iPhone in recent weeks.

Despite the Nokia Maps tile on the invite, there's some pretty compelling evidence to support the debut of new Lumia handsets at the event.

First, the invite lists Nokia before Microsoft, which seems to indicate it's more about hardware than the Windows Phone 8 software, which Redmond has already previewed on their own.

Second, September 5 just so happens to coincide with the opening of the Nokia World conference, where the Finnish handset maker is most certainly planning to take the wraps off new smartphone hardware.

We'll all have to wait until September 5 at 10am EST to know for sure, but Windows Phone fans will have some restless nights over the next three weeks in any event.

The iPhone 5 Rumor Roundup Continues

While the media's patience wears thin and the Android platform continues to grow its market share, the 'net is bursting with iPhone 5 rumors ranging from the plausible to the laughable and everything in between.

Source: T3

The most believable (and corroborated) set of Apple hints now surrounds the unannounced device's release date. iMore reported today that, coinciding with an iPhone 5 event, pre-orders for the next-gen smartphone would begin on September 12, or nine days before the alleged release day.

All of this information comes to iMore by way of "sources who have proven accurate in the past," a character we've seen a few times before, and since.

Source: BGR

His distant cousin, BGR's "trusted source" and apparent AT&T insider, also outed a late September release window for the iPhone 5, citing a rescheduled employee training event and an "all hands on deck" policy as the reasons for suspecting that timing.

The Apple press conference on September 12 is almost certainly the platform for Apple's iPhone 5 announcement, but the question is whether or not release will follow so quickly. For comparison, the iPhone 4, which released over two years ago (a longer development timeline that most), was announced on June 7 at WWDC 2010, then introduced to store shelves June 24 internationally. Apple is no stranger to surprises, or to swift turn-around times, so the September and October rumors sound like reasonable guesses.

Over the past week, images and even video have "leaked" from Japanese manufacturers, French journalists, and American speculators. The footage swam over the Pacific from Japanese site Macotakara to deliver a purported first full look at the casing that will be holding the new iPhone. While this seems to be in line with other ideas about the wraparound middle-back cover, there's no way to know if the video is a good-looking farce or the real deal.

Source: iPhone 5 Guides

Other rumors about the casing and display have circled around a 4-inch screen and a thinner, higher-resolution LCD panel.

Blogs all across the tech-interest sphere have been claiming for months that the days of the 30-pin iPhone dock connector won't continue with the iPhone 5. Although a consensus on the smaller connector has yet to be reached, it's not unthinkable to imagine that Apple may be going to the micro-USB standard, if changing at all.

Leaked images of what may be the iPhone 5's motherboard have also given rise to some spurious speculation. While some contend that the SIM card slot from the pictures looks to support micro-SIM cards, those infamous sources are claiming some insider knowledge about nano-SIM cards for the iPhone 5.

IGN will be on-hand at the September 12 event and keeping tabs on all the rumors (and eventually facts) about the iPhone 5 and Apple's next generation of mobile devices.

The Shining Prequel in the Works

It may be the stuff of nightmares for fans of a horror classic, but rumours are circulating that a prequel to The Shining is on the cards.

According to the LA Times, Warner Bros. is considering a return to the Overlook Hotel, with the prequel plot focussing on “what happened before Jack Torrance, his wife and their psychic son arrived at the haunted retreat.”

Shutter Island scribe Laeta Kalogridis has been brought on-board to produce alongside partners Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt.

But the Times’ source was at pains to point out that any Shining prequel “was in a very early stage and not even formally in development” and had no word on whether Stephen King - writer of the original novel - would have any involvement.

So would you like to see this particular prequel get the green-light?

EA Will Not Replace Its CEO

EA has confirmed that John Riccitiello will remain CEO. Last month, rumors emerged that COO Peter Moore would be stepping up to replace Riccitiello, but during its annual shareholders meeting today, EA said that will not be the case.

"At this point in time, there is absolutely no plan to replace John as the CEO. We have a high level of confidence in both him and the management team," EA Chairman Larry Probst said. "The Board has a very high level of confidence in John and the management team."

Probst added that the management team has "done a really good job of exceeding their operating plan in the last two fiscal years. We think the strategy is spot on going forward and we have a high level of confidence they will execute well against that strategy."

According to Probst, all senior positions are evaluated regularly, but Riccitiello’s role is safe for now. Riccitiello first became CEO when Probst stepped down in 2007 and held the position during EA’s launch of Origin and unveiling of the Online Pass.

EA will likely discuss its future in more depth during its first quarter earnings call, currently scheduled to take place next week.

Indiana Jones 5 Not in the Works

According to producer Frank Marshall, rumours of a fifth Indiana Jones film have been greatly exaggerated.

While doing the publicity rounds for The Bourne Legacy, Marshall discussed George Lucas’s position with Crave Online, explaining: “I think he’s thinking about ideas but he’s certainly not writing one. We’d love to keep the series going but again it’s got to be a really good story. They’re hard to do.”

The most recent film in the series - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – received mixed reviews when it hit in 2008, but went on to gross $787m world-wide.

And as far as Marshall is concerned, the franchise could end there. “I say, for me, [Kingdom of the Crystal Skull] is the last hurrah” he told Collider. “I know that yes, we talked about [a fifth film], but there’s no idea. There’s no MacGuffin.”

Final Fantasy Versus XIII NOT Cancelled

Despite rumours to the contrary last week, Square Enix's CEO has revealed that Final Fantasy Versus XIII has not been cancelled.

According to Andriasang, Yoichi Wada confirmed via Twitter today that the game is alive and well.

Just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, it'd knock you off your feet.

"There's someone making a false rumour that Versus was cancelled," he said. "Haha... just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, it'd knock you off your feet - lol."

Many were convinced the game had been canned after a suspicious absence at E3 this year. When reports of the title's cancellation surfaced on Kotaku last week, Square Enix refused to comment on rumours or speculation, further fuelling our fears.

The fact that the game lives on, however, means the reported Final Fantasy XIII announcement expected in September could very well relate to it in some way. Considering the title has been in development since 2006, we're long overdue for some news.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was originally announced in 2006 as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series of games. The other games two games in the series announced at the same time, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0 have both been released, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 has also been announced and launched since.

Luke Karmali is IGN's UK Editorial Assistant, and is overjoyed upon hearing that he'll one day get his grubby mitts on Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Share in his glee on IGN and on Twitter.
