Grand Theft Auto V Details Revealed

The first official details about Grand Theft Auto V have been announced. In the newest digital issue of Game Informer, Rockstar has revealed that the game will have three playable characters -- Michael, Trevor and Franklin. Players will switch between characters “constantly” with a single button press, allowing them to see missions from different perspectives.

Michael is a retired bank robber who is now in the witness protection program, and whose wife has burned through his substantial fortune, causing him to get “back into the game.” His friend Trevor, the second protagonist, is a “drugged out psychopath” who seems prone to violence. The final character, Franklin, is introduced stealing a car. All three come together to perform heists, which are described as “a big theme in the game.”

Game Informer's Cover

Players will experience missions as different combinations of the three, and each will have a different skillset. For example, in one heist mission, Michael rappels down the side of a building while Franklin uses a sniper rifle from afar and Trevor flies in a helicopter above. Players can switch back and forth between Michael grabbing a target inside the building or Franklin trying to snipe enemies inside. Once you escape, everyone meets in the helicopter, and the player can choose to fly it as Trevor, snipe other pilots as Franklin or fire a gun from the back of the vehicle as Michael.

Los Santos will be the biggest open world in Rockstar's history, "bigger than Read Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto IV and San Andreas combined." Players will also be able to explore underwater areas of the city.

Rockstar has also changed driving mechanics, noting that cars “hold to the ground a bit better” and have “a little more physics on them,” making driving feel more like a racing game. Shooting and melee combat have also been improved, as have pedestrian models (some pedestrians have now been mapped using motion capture for more realistic movement). Rockstar also hasn’t employed any celebrities to provide voices for the game.

Heists will be a key element, but players will also experience elements similar to Red Dead Redemption’s dynamic encounters, including stopping to check on broken cars and picking up hitchhikers. Players will also be able to chase and catch muggers or rob cash vans.

Characters can be customized by changing clothes, but height and weight customization isn’t included. The phone will also return for obtaining important info, but now allows players to access the internet, among other things. Some items previously only accessible from the phone in Grand Theft Auto IV will simply be accessible on the map.

Each character will have their own social circle -- Michael has his son (Jimmy), Franklin has a "crazy friend" named Lamar and Trevor has a paranoid conspiracy theorist friend named Ron. Separately from missions, players will be able to switch between characters and see them living their daily lives, including some situations that may be "surprising."

Players won't be able to own real-estate, but there will be an economy for players to spend their money. GTA V has non canonical connection to the PS2-era Grand Theft Auto games, so don't expect to encounter C.J. or Tommy.

Grand Theft Auto V was originally announced in October 2011, followed by the first trailer in November. The idea of multiple playable characters was actually rumored early on, first suggested the day after the original announcement.

Rockstar will release the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto V on November 14th. For all the details in the trailer, check out our live Rewind Theater of the trailer that day, plus a ton of additional info throughout next week.

GTA V Coming Spring 2013

A leaked image of a European poster for Grand Theft Auto V indicates the latest in Rockstar's blockbuster saga will be released in Spring 2013.

That news, via fan forum GTA-Five, is hardly unexpected, but this is the first time we've had reasonable confirmation of any sort of release window for the game. There is no indication if this timetable applies to a global release, or if Rockstar intends to stagger its release dates. Grand Theft Auto IV had a simultaneous release in Australia, Europe and North America, with Japan receiving the game some 6 months later.

The leaked poster, courtesy of forum "GTA-Five."

It's also worth pointing out that the only system/publisher logos on the poster are for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It appears as though - for now - there are no plans for Wii U.

More GTA V news is set to arrive in November. Stay tuned to IGN for more in the near future.

Rockstar Wants Grand Theft Auto 5 Multiplayer Suggestions

Rockstar wants your help in shaping the multiplayer of Grand Theft Auto V.

In a post on the Rockstar Blog the company revealed it's looking for a way to incorporate the Crews system from Max Payne 3 into the game, but would like player's feedback on how best to do so.

We'd like to take this opportunity to ask all of you for your feedback, input and ideas for features you'd like to see created for Crews in the game.

The post reads, "As we're busy working on Grand Theft Auto V, we'd like to take this opportunity to ask all of you for your feedback, input and ideas for features you'd like to see created for Crews in the game.

"Whether it's suggestions for competitive in-game Crew features in Multiplayer, new ways to manage and recruit, ideas for enhancing Social Club Crew pages and leaderboards, things you did and didn't like about Crews in Max Payne 3, or any thoughts at all related to Crews really that you'd like to share - we're all ears.

"We'd especially love to hear from current Crew members and leaders so that we can continue making our unique approach to persistent team based Multiplayer as fun as it can be in GTA V."

The Crew system in Max Payne 3 allows you to join public or private groups in order to duke it out with rival gangs. Doing so nets you XP, and can lead to Feuds with rival groups who have killed one of your Crew members. As it currently stands, Crews made in Max Payne 3 are planned to be carried over into Grand Theft Auto V.

Anyone wanting to send feedback to Rockstar should send an email to GTAVCrewFeedback@rockstargames.com with their suggestions. Be sure to let us know what you tell them in the comments below.

Seriously This Time: Grand Theft Auto III PSN-Bound This Week

Rockstar and Sony were set to release Grand Theft Auto III on PlayStation Network back in July. But the day the PS2 Classic version of GTA3 was set to come to the PSN in North America, it was unceremoniously delayed for reasons unknown.

While we still don’t quite know what happened to delay GTA3’s release at the last minute, we know now that Grand Theft Auto III is scheduled once again to be released on the PlayStation Network as a PS2 Classic. Its price is unknown, although chances are it will cost the same price as every other PS2 Classic: $9.99. Its release timing in other territories is also unknown.

Grand Theft Auto III originally came to PlayStation 2 in the fall of 2001. Widely considered one of the most influential games ever released, GTA3 was one of PS2's best-selling games.

More GTA V Screens: Taking Care of Business

Another day, more Grand Theft Auto V screenshots. This time, Rockstar has released four screens with the theme of 'Business' on its Newswire.

On the run from the police? A car transporter not the most inconspicuous form of escape.

A biplane: when a regular plane just isn't enough.

The Infernus makes a return.

Police sniper lines up a shot from a helicopter.

This is the third album released by Rockstar this week. On Monday we got a glimpse at the vehicles available in San Andreas, and on Wednesday we gazed at the leisure activities on offer in the game.

Today's post ends with the statement: "Hope you enjoyed this week’s 10 screenshot special from Grand Theft Auto V".

New GTA V Screens Show Car and Jet

Rockstar has released new screenshots taken from Grand Theft Auto V. The photos were posted on Rockstar's Newswire. They showcase various modes of transport that will be available to citizens of San Andreas.

Transport won't be limited to vehicles with engines. (That looks an awful lot like Santa Monic Pier.)

The 'Cheetah': will it be one of the fastest cars in the game?

Take to the skies in fighter jets?

Tantalisingly, the post finishes with the promise of "More to come this week..."

Grand Theft Auto V Making 'Substantial Progress'

Rockstar parent company Take-Two has provided a brief status update about Grand Theft Auto V. During the company’s first quarter fiscal 2013 earnings call today, CEO Strauss Zelnick commented that Grand Theft Auto V is in “full development” and that Rockstar has made “substantial progress” on the game’s “vast, detailed open world setting.”

Beyond that, Zelnick was coy about Grand Theft Auto V’s release date, commenting “we can't talk about the credibility of a release date that we haven't announced” when asked about various reports about the game’s timing. When asked how often Take-Two communicates with Rockstar regarding the game’s status, Zelnick simply said he “wouldn't talk publicly about the way we communicate with our teams internally” and noted that Take-Two is “blessed” to be in business with Rockstar. “We have the best creative teams in the business across our company,” he added.

Grand Theft Auto V seemed to be the focus of many shareholders during the call’s Q&A session, but one investor also inquired about Agent, which, aside from aside from a few screenshots, hasn’t been heard from since it was originally announced in 2009. “We haven’t announced anything about the title yet” was Zelnick’s only comment.

Overall, Take-Two referred to the first quarter of its 2013 fiscal year as below expectations, largely pointing to lower than expected sales of Max Payne 3 (which has shipped three million units worldwide) and Spec Ops: The Line. The company earned $226.1 million for the quarter -- down $108.3 million compared to the same quarter last year -- and reported a $110.8 million loss, more than $100 million over last year’s first quarter loss of $8.6 million. “Consumers at this stage in the hardware cycle are more selective than ever,” Zelnick said. “Our teams are already trying to do groundbreaking work. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we succeed mightily. Occasionally we are disappointed. We’d like that to be even less occasionally.”

Take-Two is investing heavily in digitally-delivered content, including mobile games and downloads. 14% of Take-Two revenue this quarter came from downloaded content, including Civilization V’s recent Gods and Kings expansion and Max Payne Mobile. A free multiplayer add-on for Max Payne 3 was announced, as well as online launches including an open beta for NBA 2K13 in China, Comedy Central’s Indecision Game for mobile and NBA 2K All Stars for the GREE platform. Catalog sales were up 50% compared to last year, including successes like Grand Theft Auto III 10th Anniversary Edition and Red Dead Redemption.

Take-Two expects this fiscal year “to be one of the best years in Take-Two's history,” projecting between $1.7 and $1.8 billion. 55% of that total is expected to come from Rockstar, with the remaining 45% coming from 2K titles. 2K’s upcoming release slate includes Borderlands 2 in September, followed by NBA 2K13 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown in October. First-person shooter XCOM is scheduled for fiscal 2014 (meaning it will arrive between April 2013 and March 2014) and BioShock Infinite is scheduled for February 2013. Take-Two also hinted at additional titles that have yet to be announced.

Take-Two noted that Borderlands 2 has some of the highest pre-order numbers in the company’s history, behind only Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. "Consumer anticipation is phenomenal," chief operating officer Karl Slatoff commented.

GTA3 Not Coming to PSN Today, After All

Grand Theft Auto III – one of the most important and influential games ever released in the gaming industry’s history – was originally slated to come to the North American PlayStation Network today after receiving ESRB certification earlier this year. However, the plug has been pulled on the release of the game, at least temporarily.

At the top of the PlayStation Blog’s post regarding the PlayStation Store’s weekly update, it says this:

“Note: Due to an unforeseen complication, the Grand Theft Auto III PS2 Classic is not publishing with today’s Store post. We will update you when a new release date has been identified. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Why the game has been pulled at the last minute remains to be seen. We’ll update when we learn more.

Grand Theft Auto III’s Release Date on PlayStation Network

Back in January, we reported the good news that both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City were PlayStation Network-bound. And now we know, thanks to the Official PlayStation Blogcast, that Grand Theft Auto III will be coming to the PSN in North America this Tuesday, July 31st.

Grand Theft Auto III will be released in its PS2 Classic form, indicating that it will cost $9.99 and exist as a straight port without any upgrades or Trophies. While its release date of Tuesday, July 31st is confirmed for North America, its release date in other territories is still unknown.

Grand Theft Auto III was first released on PlayStation 2 in 2001 and is considered a seminal release of immense importance in the gaming industry. It’s the fifth best-selling PS2 game of all-time, and was re-released on a variety of platforms, most recently on iOS.
