Steve Carell On Why He Won’t Return For The Office Finale

As we approach the series finale of The Office in May many fans are wondering if Michael Scott himself, Steve Carell, might make a cameo appearance.

NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt had already told reporters at the (TCA) Television Critics Association’s press tour that there was little chance of Carell’s return for the finale. “He left in the way that he wanted that character to leave,” Greenblatt said. “There’s maybe a little Hail Mary pass on a cameo but I think the decision is that he [doesn't want to compromise] his exit.”

The actor is currently in Sundance promoting his upcoming comedy The Way Back. While there, he confirmed to Access Hollywood that there is no return to the hallowed hallways of Dunder Mifflin in his future. It’s less about timing or scheduling for Carell, and more about what he feels is right for the show.

“I just didn’t think it was right for the character, because that character had an arc within the story and kind of grew and evolved past the idea of the documentary,” Carell explained. “I mean I’m really good friends with everybody in the cast and (U.S. Office creator) Greg Daniels, and I want to go back to say ‘hi’ certainly before it all ends. But I just thought in terms of the character, it didn’t really make sense.”

He did jokingly say that he may be persuaded to return just to do one last The Office blooper reel.
