Wiig and Hader Are Skeleton Twins

Kristen Wiig is now set to join her SNL and Adventureland co-star Bill Hader in Skeleton Twins, a new indie comedy from brothers and producers Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass. Luke Wilson is also set to co-star.

Wiig and Hader in Adventureland

According to Variety, Wiig and Hader will play "estranged twins Maggie and Milo, who coincidentally cheat death on the same day, prompting them to reunite and confront how their lives went so wrong. For Maggie, that means re-examining her marriage to sweet 'nature frat boy' Lance (Wilson), while her gay brother Milo revisits his old flame Rich, a former teacher with a past he'd rather keep quiet. As the twins' reunion reinvigorates them both, they realize the key to fixing their lives may lie in fixing their relationship with each other."

Craig Johnson (True Adolescents) will direct the film from a script he co-wrote with Black Swan scribe Mark Heyman. Production is scheduled to begin in New York at the end of this month.

Gemma Arterton Will Do Absolutely Anything

Clash of the Titans actress Gemma Arterton is now confirmed for the long-awaited Monty Python comedy project Absolutely Anything. Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch is also currently in negotiations to join the film, TheWrap reports.

Terry Jones is attached to direct the picture, with Monty Python vets Jones, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and John Cleese set for voiceover roles -- as is Robin Williams.

The story revolves around a teacher who is endowed by aliens with magical powers to do "absolutely anything." Of course, the Earthling quickly makes a mess of things, and he must learn to take control of what he does in order to set things right again.

Production is slated for the first quarter of 2013. Jones will direct from a script he co-wrote with Gavin Scott.

Arterton will next be seen in the action-adventure fantasy film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring opposite Jeremy Renner.

ParaNorman Haunts Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment will bring the 3D stop-motion horror-comedy, ParaNorman, to Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and DVD Nov. 27, 2012. The critically acclaimed film (review here) went on to gross roughly $85 million worldwide, not quite reaching the heights of Coraline, the last feature produced by Laika.

Here's a synopsis of the film, direct from the official press release, "From the makers of Coraline comes the story of Norman, a boy who must use his gift of seeing and speaking with the dead to save his town from a centuries-old curse about to come true. Caught in a wild race against time, the young ghoul whisperer will find his paranormal abilities pushed to their otherworldly limits as he bravely summons up all that makes a hero – courage and compassion.

Featuring the voice talents of Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In), Tucker Albrizzi (Good Luck Charlie), Anna Kendrick (The Twilight Saga), Casey Affleck (Tower Heist,), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (How to Train Your Dragon), Leslie Mann (Knocked Up), Jeff Garlin (WALL-E), Elaine Stritch (30 Rock), Bernard Hill (Titanic), Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill), Tempestt Bledsoe (Guys with Kids), Alex Borstein (Family Guy), and John Goodman (Monsters, Inc.), it’s a hilariously spooky adventure for the whole family in eye-popping 3D, made by LAIKA in stop-motion animation."

ParaNorman will come to Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D encoded in 1080p, mixed in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The DVD will feature an anamorphic widescreen presentation, with 5.1 Dolby Digital audio.

There will be three releases of ParaNorman on home video -- a three-disc Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, featuring a 3DBD, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy and UltraViolet copy of the film; a two-disc Blu-ray combo pack, which nixes the 3DBD; and a single-disc DVD.

Extras for all three releases will include the following:

  • Preliminary Animatic Sequences with commentary
  • “Peering Through the Veil” Behind-the-Scenes featurette
  • 7 short segments showcasing Norman and his co-stars

Ben and Kate: "Pilot" Review

Advance Review: From creator Dana Fox (What Happens in Vegas) comes a sweet, but not too sweet, comedy about a pair of grown siblings who, long ago, formed a unique bond due to an unhappy home life while growing up. Kate (Dakota Johnson - daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) wound up getting pregnant at an early age and is now the sort of typical young, quirky "trying to make ends meet" TV mom that we've all come to expect. Unlucky in love, but lucky when it comes to the simple, genuine things in life. Like her extremely precocious five year-old daughter, Maddie. So far, so what, right? Kate's a somewhat typical klutzy, "rom-com" leading lady. But then comes Ben.

Ben, played by Academy Award-winning screenwriter (he co-wrote The Descendents with Community's Jim Rash) Nat Faxon, is Kate's older brother. And whereas Kate "grew up too fast," Ben "never grew up at all." He's a big, doofy man-child who's constantly making Kate's life more complicated with his crazy, random antics and, honestly, your enjoyment of Ben and Kate is primarily going to depend on whether or not you find Ben annoying or endearing. I happen to be fall into the latter category on this one, although I can totally see people not enjoying Ben's juvenile mania. I understand if he gets under your skin. In fact, I've seen this pilot twice now and I think about the Bill Murray movie "What About Bob?" each time I see it. Because, drawing from that film, you either love Bob or you totally empathize with Richard Dreyfuss.

So, much in the same way that FOX presented us with Zooey Deschanel's quirky Jess last year when New Girl premiered, Ben's naive dreamer qualities will either excite or irritate you. I think Faxon does a wonderful job of playing a lovable idiot and there were more than a few scenes here that I found pretty damn funny. In this first episode, Ben discovers that his ex, the love of his life, is getting married and decides to come up with a last ditch effort to win her back. Of course, none of this gels with Kate's plan to finally go out on a normal date with her boyfriend George and, possibly, have "the sex" for the first time since her daughter was born.

And while I brought up "What About Bob?" earlier, my thoughts also shift into darker territory when I'm reminded of Laura Linney's character from Love Actually. Remember her? The woman who had to be at the beck and call of her mentally ill brother and couldn't maintain a normal relationship because of it? I probably think of that because A) I just recently watched that movie again, and B) Kate's total acceptance/surrendering to the fact that the comically-obtuse Ben will always be a giant, dominating chunk of her life.

The spotlight might be on Faxon's Ben, but it's Johnson's Kate who does the heavy lifting. She's the other main reason why I feel this show works. If she were just the "straight man" put-upon sister, this would fall apart. These two have a goofy connection and by the end of the episode you feel as though they actually compliment one another. Ben, despite his life-disrupting ways, is protective of Kate a way that has no equal. Which comes in handy since Kate herself winds up in screwball situations of her own.

The rest of the players here - Lucy Punch's full-of-advice bimbo BJ, Echo Kellum's Kate-obsessed Tommy - are fine. Young Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones), when not spouting wisdom beyond her years, makes a great, doe-eyed sounding board for Ben's lunacy. Again, depending on your personality there's a chance that Ben might frustrate you, but I think Ben and Kate is one of the most promising new comedies of the season.

The Ben and Kate pilot can be seen on Hulu. The series premieres on Tuesday, September 25th on FOX.

Ben and Kate: "Pilot" Review

Advance Review: FOX's new single-camera comedy Ben and Kate doesn't officially premiere for another month, but since the pilot episode is currently available for viewing via Hulu (see below!), we're considering it fair game for review.

New Michael J. Fox Sitcom Coming to NBC

NBC has just signed a deal to produce a new single-camera comedy that will bring Michael J. Fox back to weekly TV. While the project was sought after by FOX, ABC and CBS (who came the closest among the other contenders), it was Peacock chief Robert Greenblatt who eventually won over Fox, who will produce and star.

As Vulture reports, the big selling point from Greenblatt was that he gave the project a full 22-episode order -- Not many shows get an order to go to series before they shoot a pilot, and 22-episodes is an especially rare upfront commitment. Current plans are to film the Sony Pictures Television series in New York, which also happens to be where Fox worked on Spin City. The half-hour show will be a family comedy loosely inspired by Fox's own life, presumably incorporating his real-life battle with Parkinson's disease.

While Fox's project is now targeted for fall 2013, it's likely that the pilot will be shot well in advance of that, taking advantage of the longer lead time.

The still untitled comedy is created by Cougar Town writer Sam Laybourne and the pilot will be directed by Will Gluck (Easy A).

Heather Graham Returns for Hangover 3

She may have missed out on the Wolf Pack's last adventure to Thailand, but Heather Graham will be making her return for Todd Phillips' comedy sequel The Hangover Part III.

According to Variety, the actress will reprise her role as Jade, the Vegas stripper who married Ed Helms' character Stu. This seems appropriate considering part of the movie will once again be set in Las Vegas. In addition to the principal cast, Graham joins returning franchise veterans Mike Epps and Ken Jeong.

The Hangover Part III is currently aiming for a May 24, 2013 release.

Arrested Development: Season 4 Begins Filming Today - Bateman Tweets First Photo

This is less a news piece than a place to celebrate... Because Arrested Development is back in production! Yes, today is the first day of shooting on the miraculously resurrected comedy series, which will return with ten new episodes next year, debuting on Netflix.

Jason Bateman (who already provided us with some pics of TV son Michael Cera visiting the newly rebuilt Bluth home set) has tweeted the first photo from the midst of actual production on the show, with the words, "First Day. Here we go..." No, it's not much to go on, but we'll take what we can get. Just imagine the funny things being said as they film!

Update: Yep, we agree - those looks like some Workaholics cast members (Adam DeVine and Anders Holm) in the photo.
