After announcing the reveal of retro classic franken-console RetroN 4, third-party hardware developer Hyperkin pulled a fast one at the Midwest Gaming Classic and instead revealed a different console, the RetroN 5. Jam-packed with the RetroN 4's NES/SNES/Genesis/Gameboy capabilities and HDMI compatibility, the RetroN 5 adds on a fifth console: Japan's Famicom system.
“We found that we could add the Famicom cartridge slot without hindering our current development cycle,” Steven Mar, Hyperkin’s Executive Director, said in a statement. “We wanted to allow gamers all over the world to be able to play their favorite games with a myriad of different options to enhance the overall gaming experience.”
The RetroN 5 will come with six controller ports (for each console's controllers) and one wireless bluetooth controller that has handy macro buttons. In addition to the HDMI port, the system will have shaders that will help enhance images up to 720p resolution and both PAL and NSTC capabilities to play all your favorite classic games. The console also comes with plenty of gaming-friendly features, including button reassignments, freeze state systems to allow save points at any time, and overclocking capabilities to speed up and slow down gameplay.
