The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards have been announced and Lincoln leads the way, picking up a whopping 12 nominations, including nods for Steven Spielberg’s direction and Daniel Day-Lewis’s grandstanding performance as honest Abe.
Life of Pi wasn’t far behind, Ang Lee’s magical adaptation of Yann Martel’s bestselling book managing 11 nominations.
Both films make the Best Picture category, alongside Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Amour, Django Unchained and Argo.
But there was no place for the hotly tipped Skyfall in any of the major categories. Instead it picked up nominations for cinematography, music, sound mixing, sound editing and song, for Adele’s monster hit. And Bond shouldn’t be too blue, as the Academy is also paying tribute to the character on this, his 50th screen birthday.
In the Best Actor category, Day-Lewis goes up against Denzel Washington (Flight), Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) and Joaquin Phoenix (The Master).
While for Best Actress the nominees include Naomi Watts (The Impossible), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), while the oldest ever nominee Emanuelle Riva (Amour) will be going toe-to-toe with the youngest ever nominee Quevenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild).
The Avengers managed a nomination, doing battle with Prometheus and The Hobbit in the visual effects category.
And IGN favourite Wreck-It-Ralph will be taking on Frankenweenie, The Pirates!, Paranorman and Brave for the Best Animation award.
The full list of nominees can be found at the Academy’s official site, while the awards will be handed out on February 24, with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane hosting.
