How I Met Your Mother: What We Hope to See in the Final Season

This coming Monday, How I Met Your Mother's final season will debut with a one-hour premiere. Over the last eight years, we've seen many an adventure unfold for our five heroes, and soon Ted's journey to meet the Mother will finally come to an end.

IGN's How I Met Your Mother: Season 8 Review

But before that happens, there's still a few loose ends to tie up. IGN was lucky enough to pre-screen the first two episodes of the premiere, in which we got our first glimpse at what's come to be known as the longest wedding weekend ever. Based on what we saw -- and without spoiling anything -- we've put together a quick list of what we'd like to see before the series concludes...

"I Now Pronounce You Hus-bro and Wife."

What's a wedding weekend without a wedding ceremony, right? Well, the truth of the matter is, we haven't technically seen if it actually happens. We've seen the just-before and the just-after, but will the actual marriage go off without a hitch? In the Season 8 premiere, Barney and Robin both appeared to be getting cold feet mere moments before the nuptials, and yet we'd also seen bits and pieces of the reception, where everything looked to be fine and dandy. Then again, later in the episode at Farhampton Station, Ted seemed down on the whole affair. Could it be that something major happens before Barney and Robin say, "I do"?

Well, we did learn one tidbit about the ceremony from next week's premiere, and that is Barney has picked out one awesome ring bear (and no, that's not a typo).

How We Met Robin's Mother

Like mother like daughter?

Though we've heard her mentioned a handful of times, Robin's mother is the last piece of the parent puzzle in How I Met Your Mother. At first, knowing Robin, we might think that Mother Scherbatsky is a gun-toting, cigar chomping Canuck with rage issues, but we also know that Robin gets most of her tomboy ticks from her father. Of the little history we've gathered, Robin used to live with her father after her parents divorced, but she later moved in with her mom during her teen years, after getting sick of her father treating her like a boy -- and I think we all recall Robin's teen years. (*cough*Sparkles*cough*) So, it stands to reason that maybe Robin's mom isn't a spitfire at all, but rather a celebrity-obsessed socialite, much like Robin's popstar alter ego.

In any case, if they were going to introduce Robin's mom, Barney and Robin's wedding would be the place to do it. The question is, who would they get to play her? (Stockard Channing, anyone?)

Judgeship v. Italy

Daphe (Sherri Shepherd) won't be taking any crap from Marshall this season.

Seriously, could Marshall's judgeship news have come at a worse time? Now indefinitely separated from his "Lilypad," Marshall will begin Season 9 with a frantic attempt to catch up with Lily and Ted, who have already begun their road trip to Farhampton. During his travels, Marshall will run into a spot of trouble on the plane, thanks to an irritating seat mate, Daphne (played by Sherri Shepherd). Needless to say, it may be awhile before Marshall reunites with his wifey to tell her the big news.

Meanwhile, as you'll see in the premiere, Lily has a rather amusing coping mechanism to deal with her separation anxiety from Marshall. I won't give anything away, just keep your ears open for the phrase "Kennedy Package." We'll see where it goes from there.

Two Slaps, Son!

It hurts so good...

At the time of writing this article, Marshall's official Slap Bet Clock is still active and counting down, so this item isn't so much a matter of "if" or "when," just... "how."

Yes, Marshall still has two savory smacks to dole out, and creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays have told fans that they haven't forgotten about the "gentleman's agreement." As Thomas explained at Comic-Con earlier this summer, "There's going to be an episode that takes place during a slap" -- in other words, it will be a frame story that's literally intercut with a mega-slow motion slap. (How's that for fan service?) As for the other slap, well, that's for fate to decide.
