This past weekend, Nintendo launched Wii U in Japan, the fourth and final major territory launch it planned by the end of 2012. Early sales reports are coming in from overseas, and while Nintendo's new system isn't outdoing its predecessor, it's still performing reasonably well in its home country.
For its first two days (12/8-12/9), Wii U sold 308,570 units. In 2006, Wii sold 371,936 systems during its first weekend on sale in Japan. By comparison, 425,000 Wii U systems were sold in the United States during its first 7 days on store shelves.
Famitsu (using data from sales-tracking firm Enterbrain) lists New Super Mario Bros. U as Wii U's best-selling game with 170,563 units. Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate came in second with 110,149 units and Nintendo Land with 78,461 copies sold. In 2006, Wii Sports led Wii software sales, followed by Wii Play and Twilight Princess.
Wii U's opening weekend in Japan trails a few notable systems, including the PlayStation 2, Vita, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 3DS. Yet globally the system is fast approaching 1 million units sold - if it hasn't already passed that milestone.
