iPhone Dominates US Smartphone Sales

Despite the ousting of Scott Forstall and the iOS 6 maps controversy, the iPhone accounted for the majority of smartphone sales in the US over a 12 week period ending on November 25th. According to new data from market research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech reported by AllThingsD, the iOS-based smartphones made up 53.3-percent of unit sales, besting Android-powered devices, which claimed only 41.9-percent. Apple's current market share is the highest it has ever been, the firm claims.

Compared to stats from the same time last year, Apple has made a 17.5-percent leap, while Android 10.9-percent drop. Apple has maintained a consistent lead over the last two months, though by a narrower margin in reporting period prior to ComTech's latest report. According to data gathered before October 28th, the firm noted iPhone sales hovered around 48.1-percent, while Android followed closely at 46.7-percent. Compared to stats from the same reporting period last year

As for the underdogs, RIM's cut of sales have hit an abysmally low 1.4-percent, though Microsoft's Windows Phone platform made a modest year-over-year gain of .6-percent, now claiming 2.7-percent of sales.

But Apple's success in the US hasn't been replicated in Europe, with Apple only accounting 25-percent of sales, falling far behind Android's 44-percent over the same reporting period.
