This was a tough year for those of us who watch the Super Bowl not so much for the football game they’re showing but for the oh-so expensive commercials. Not only did we have to endure a long, power outage-fueled section with no ads (nor a football game for those hoping to see that!), but the ads this year were less than inspired. In fact, for our Top 10 list, we had to really reach this time.
Per usual, we’re leaving out the movie ads (which typically are a different form of advertising – truncated trailers that are part of a larger campaign), though you can see all of those over at IGN Movies.
Beyond those movie ads, here are the Super Bowl commercials we felt really stood out this year… or at least the ones we got some entertainment out of...
Taco Bell: "Viva Young"
Not "great" perhaps (but again, we had to stretch this year), this Taco Bell ad, set to a Spanish version of Fun’s hit song “We Are Young”, had several amusing moments. And as IGN editor Roth Cornet put it, “It's like Cocoon with fast food.”
Samsung Mobile: "The Next Big Thing"
Paul Rudd, Seth Rogan and Bob Odenkirk in an ad should be funny, right? And indeed, it was, with Rogan and Rudd snarking on each other. Though it did go on a bit too long, which many of us Tweeting along with the Super Bowl couldn’t help but note was in line with many of the Judd Apatow movies Rudd and Rogan star in.
Time Warner Cable: "Enjoy Better/Clean Up"
Time Warner, you had us at “Family obsessed with The Walking Dead." Throw in a cameo from Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) himself and we’re espcially happy.
Hyundai: "Team"
Hyundai had multiple ads during the Super Bowl and they were all well done. The best one featured a kid recruiting a team of overachieving boys to take down a jerk and his jerk friends.
Milk: "The Rock in Morning Run"
In the midst of a crapload of ads for movies starring The Rock, it felt oddly perfect to show the one thing that would make Dwayne Johnson not stop to be an action hero - an epic quest for milk!
