Community's Ken Jeong Joins ABC Pilot, Spy

Community has always had to fight for renewal each year. But while Donald Glover began developing a potential new project at NBC last year, none of the cast had ever taken a part on a new pilot before… until now.

Deadline is reporting that Ken Jeong has joined the ABC pilot Spy, which will no doubt have many wondering what this means for the future of the Greendale gang.

The simple answer, in the short term, is likely nothing. Community wrapped production on Season 4 in December, so everyone is free to work on other projects right now. And Jeong’s casting is in second position on Spy – should Spy be ordered to series and Community also renewed, he’d stay with Community and need to be replaced on the new series. But whenever a network is willing to cast an actor who’s on a current series on their pilot, it usually means they think there’s a pretty good chance that actor will be free, since replacing that person can be a big (and sometimes costly, if reshoots are needed) pain to deal with down the line.

Last year, a couple of different actors from Cougar Town shot new pilots, only for the series to be saved by its move to TBS. And when the chances of Happy Endings being renewed were low in its first season, Damon Wayans took a part in New Girl, only for Happy Endings to get renewed after all – and Wayans' character on New Girl to get quickly written out.

Spy is a remake of the UK series of the same name and will star Rob Corddry (Childrens Hospital) as Tim, described by Deadline as, “a well intentioned father of a highly intelligent and verbal son (Mason Cook), who also happens to be his complete opposite, who inadvertently takes a job at the Secret Service in order to prove himself a worthy father.” Ken Jeong will play Tim's boss, known only as The Examiner, and described by Deadline as, “lithe and mischievous.”

Community returned to relatively strong numbers for Season 4, only to quickly fall to its lowest ratings ever by the third week. However, it’s worth noting that with NBC’s schedule in shambles, Community is still tied with or even out performing several other comedies on the network (pretty much everything but The Office and Parks and Recreation), meaning it still has a shot at renewal.
