Writers Talk Barbarella and Kojak

While recently discussing the past, present and future of the Bond franchise with Skyfall scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, IGN also took the opportunity to quiz them about their forthcoming TV adaptation of Barbarella for Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn.

“We’re discussing it - we’re going to work it out with him,” Purvis explained. “We’ve started – it’s great for us to work with someone like that. Drive was a great film. We’ve already got some ideas. You have to have faith that people will like it.”

“It’s got to be about something,” Wade added. “And with Nicolas we have to do a good job. But science-fiction is great when it’s a metaphor and about something. About our world. That’s what the aspiration will be. But Barbarella is a very good question. There are some strong things that were in the film that were from the comic books and we’re going back to that."

Wade also discussed another project that they have on their horizon.

“We’re doing Kojak with Vin Diesel,” he revealed. “He’s producing it. He’s very passionate about New York and he grew up in New York in Manhattan watching TV and Kojak was the cop that knew the streets and got on with people. It’s something that he really wants to do and we had quite a good idea for it.”

But will he retain that iconic lollipop? Purvis refused to be drawn on the subject, saying: “That is why people are going to have to buy the cinema ticket. To see.”

There's no word on a start date for either project, but watch this space...

Chris Tilly is the Entertainment Editor for IGN in the UK and is struggling to get excited about either of these movies. His poor excuse for banter can be found on both Twitter and MyIGN.
