Troubled WebOS Sold to LG for Use in Smart TVs

WebOS just never could find its place in the world. Hewlett-Packard bought the mobile operating system from Palm for a whopping $1.2 billion back in 2010, and since then, well -- nothing much has come of it, thanks to continued problems with HP finding solid footing in the mobile market. But according to Reuters, the troubled WebOS may live on in LG smart televisions.

HP has sold the source code, engineering talent, and licenses for WebOS to Korea's LG Electronics for an unknown figure. HP will still maintain the patents and tech for the cloud-side of Web OS. According to LG president, Scott Ahn, the company will keep the WebOS team stationed in the HP offices, located in Silicon Valley.

How Hewlett-Packard and LG plan to use WebOS beyond smart televisions, remains to be seen. The mobile operating system is still open-source, and even if the TouchPad couldn't gain traction, the new deal with LG could mean signs of life in the television sector.
