The director of the Clone Wars series Dave Filoni has unveiled the logo for his upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels at Star Wars Celebration Europe.
Its worn look recalls the 'used future' of the original trilogy, and the warm, burnt orange nicely alludes to the colours associated with the Rebel Alliance.
He spoke at length about how the show will draw extensively on the work of seminal concept artist Ralph McQuarrie, the concept artist who helped define the look of Star Wars. So much so, a digital set of brushes have been developed for the show to help artist reproduce the art style of McQuarrie.
"For me I wanted to develop a style different from Clone Wars," said Filoni. "This show is going to be different from Clone Wars; it's intentionally going to look different. We're not proceeding with the same style. We wanted to give it its own look and feel. For me, that always goes back to Ralph McQuarrie, and that's a name you're going to hear over and over again. Star Wars owes so much to Ralph, and I'm very dedicated to the history of Star Wars and of LucasFilm. We need to maintain and respect that history but also do what made it great – it always leapt forward."
McQuarrie's designed were adapted when realised on the big screen, but Filoni is proceeding as if McQuarrie was actually depicting a world set slightly before A New Hope. So everything in Rebels, from the TIE fighters to the proportions of the Stormtroopers, will adhere more closely to the style and proportions of McQuarrie's originals concept work. Filoni also name-checked the celebrated Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki as an influence in the design of characters and the way body proportions are "pushed" slightly out of scale.
The concept art above is also a first glimpse of a new iconic ship in the Rebel fleet called 'The Ghost'. Filoni described it as a cross between a B-17 and the Millennium Falcon. "It's actually a pretty big centrepiece for the show," said Filoni. "We all like the sense in the classic films that the Millennium Falcon that was a ship but it was also a place – it was like a home. We wanted to give this new generation of kids a place they could go feel safe when they were running from the Empire. And I'm really excited about that. We're on the run again. The Empire is controlling the whole galaxy so we needed a home and a ship."
The panel concluded with Filoni being asked if Rebels will feature any of the characters he helped create in Clone Wars. "I love Star Wars characters," he replied. "All the characters, but there's always a special place in my heart for the ones that I played a part in creating, so I don't know what kind of answer that is but it's the best one I can give you."
We'll take that as a 'yes'.
