The Amazing Spider-Man 4 May be a Spin-Off Movie

Director Marc Webb has hinted that the fourth entry in his Amazing Spider-Man movies may not focus on the lycra-clad web-slinger.

Speaking to Crave Online at Comic-Con, Webb explained that as the rebooted series of films was conceived as a trilogy, he already had a story planned out.

"This was conceived of as a trilogy, so there was a defined architecture to the story we were telling and we had sort of a rough outline of what was going to happen," he admitted. "I think [for] the fourth movie, what we've discovered is there are so many ancillary characters, that have enormous, cinematic potential that there may be other ways to exploit those characters, in a way that is exciting and fun and worthwhile. It might not just be a Spider-Man movie.

"You know, what was fun about the comics is that there's an entire sort of encyclopedia of characters and stories and histories and nuances and idiosyncrasies and off-shoots. I think that that is something that seems to be really successful and has a lot of potential so it's sort of, as yet, undefined, but intentionally so."

The existence of a fourth Amazing Spider-Man movie was outed back in June, when Sony revealed release dates for both it and the third film. Both are still a fair way off - The Amazing Spider-Man 3 won't swing onto screens until June 10, 2016, while the fourth is currently slated for May 4, 2018.

Obviously a lot can happen between now and when the movie starts shooting, but it's interesting to hear what Webb's already got in mind for the future of the franchise. If there are any villains or ancillary characters you'd like to see take centre stage in the movie when it eventually appears, be sure to let us know in the comments.
