2010 PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavy Rain was originally turned down by Microsoft due to child kidnapping themes. Director and Quantic Dream founder David Cage revealed the news of Microsoft’s hesitation to move forward with the Paris-based studio during yesterday’s 2013 BAFTA Annual Games Lecture in London, as reported by Polygon.
Microsoft was apparently interested in working with the French team after the release of Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy in North America) in 2005.
“They really loved Fahrenheit,” said Cage, “and they really wanted to do something with us.”
However, despite Microsoft’s enthusiasm Cage claimed the company “got scared” upon learning of the game’s subject matter, which revolved around the kidnapping of a young boy.
“They didn't want the scandal,” he said.
“Microsoft is a great company, I'm not complaining or criticising,” Cage stressed, explaining the two companies simply had different visions of Heavy Rain and what they wanted it to be.
Quantic Dream instead struck up a relationship with Sony. According to Cage Sony was more amenable to Quantic Dream’s plans for Heavy Rain, saying that both Sony and his dev team “could understand each other and this is how Heavy Rain happened.”
Beyond: Two Souls, the second PS3 exclusive from Quantic Dream, is due to arrive on October 8 in North America, October 9 in Australia/New Zealand, and October 11 in Europe.
