Today in London, Nokia announced the Lumia 925, the latest in the Finnish company's line of high-end Windows Phone handsets. Unlike its predecessors, the Lumia 925 utilizes a metal frame — which cuts down the device's weight and thickness — while polycarbonate covers the rear with Gorilla Glass protecting the display.
As usual, Nokia has put a lot of thought into smartphone photography. The new Lumia 925 is equipped with a 8.7-megapixel PureView camera with Optical Image Stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics, and has one more lens than the similarly equipped Lumia 920 and the recently announced Lumia 928. The purpose of the extra lens is to improve picture quality in bright conditions, which should work quite nicely alongside the great low-light performance already present with Nokia's PureView-branded cameras. Interestingly, the Lumia 925 uses a dual-LED flash setup instead of the company's Xenon flash configuration revealed as part of the Lumia 928.
The company has also included its new Smart Camera software that takes a burst of 10 photos in quick succession. Once the images have been processed, users can choose between Best Shot to create a composite image from the collection, Action Shot to display a sequence of shots in a single image, or Motion Focus, which allows the focal point of an image to be altered after the photo is taken.
Aside from the extra camera lens and new Smart Camera app, the Lumia 925 is largely similar to the recently announced Lumia 928, both of which feature a 4.5-inch AMOLED display, a 1.5-GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, and 1GB of RAM. Unlike the Verizon exclusive, however, the Lumia 925 does not include built-in wireless charging. Instead, a wireless charging attachment will be sold separately in a number of colors.
The Nokia Lumia 925 will be sold in Europe and China starting June, with T-Mobile handling things in the United States after the initial launch. Solid release dates were not announced, but the phone will cost around 469 EUR (about $609) before taxes and subsidies when it comes out next month.
