5 Indie Games We Loved at SGC

This weekend we took a trip down to Dallas Texas to attend SGC. A gaming convention that was Kickstarted by fans of internet personalities like the Angry Video Game Nerd, ProJared, and the regular crew from the website ScrewAttack. We expected the typical shenanigans from the gang, but what we didn't expect to find at this self-proclaimed weekend long sleepover with friends was a collection of indie titles that ranged from beautiful to engrossing. Luckily for you we went ahead and collected 5 of them below (in no particular order) for your viewing pleasure. These are 5 indie games that we loved at SGC

Obviously when you think of ScrewAttack you think of the Angry Video Game Nerd. Well his newest game happened to be there and we were lucky enough to sit down with the Creative Director (and owner of ScrewAttack) to check it out. Surprisingly the title has a deep set of mechanics, witty (and vulgar) humor that'll make you smile, and some excellent side scrolling action.

KR-17 reminded us mostly of MegaMan, but there's no denying that it had a unique charm to it nonetheless. We sat down with the games story designer who told us a little bit more about why this familiar looking blue robot was destroying all the robots around him and setting the forest ablaze.

Guaranteed to put a smile on your face Electronic Super Joy looks a lot like Sound Shapes from afar, but it actually plays more like Super Meat Boy. After dying multiple times myself we put the controller in the hands of the Lead Designer who took us through their fantastic worlds that get your foot tapping along with their musical beats.

Simple yet engrossing is how I originally described the game and if you watch this video you'll see why. You play as a blob of goo that can swing around like Spiderman, stick to surfaces like the orb from Sound Shapes, and platform just like Mario. The game may be simplistic in concept, but it's style and mechanics made it really stand out.

This was one of my personal favorites of the show. Not only did it feature music from one of the best chip tune artists on the internet aka FantomenK, but it also incorporated gameplay elements from MegaMan, Contra and more to deliver a smooth gameplay experience that anyone could easily sit down and enjoy.
