Earth 2 #15.1: Desaad Review

earth215p1Earth 2 #15.1 breaks the familiar mold of so many Villains Month one-shots this week. But given that it's not even taking place on the same world as Forever Evil, that's to be expected. This issue reads less like an isolated origin tale and more like a side-story in the rapidly growing Earth 2/World's Finest saga. As such, this may well be the least new reader-friendly issue this week, but it will have no trouble appealing to veterans of those books.

Credit Paul Levitz for bringing his usual sense of love and care to this corner of DC's catalog. He successfully revamps Desaad from the snively minion of Darkseid in decades past to a demonic figure more than capable of wreaking his own havoc on the world. His character design is a little too straightforward and generic in its evilness, but otherwise this is one villain who is better off for the changes brought about by this reboot.

Yildiray Cinar delivers what is easily some of the strongest art in any Villains Month issue this week. These pages have a great sense of style and texture that highlights the lurking darkness that is Desaad amid the peaceful era after Darkseid's failed invasion.

This issue also succeeds in continuing the momentum of its corresponding ongoing series rather than stalling it. Levitz sets new events in motion that will have a clear impact on Earth 2 and World's Finest in the months ahead. Thankfully, not every book has to be swept up by Forever Evil or Zero Year.
