Hayao Miyazaki Will Retire After Latest Film

Oscar-winning Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, now 72, will retire from directing following the release of his latest movie The Wind Rises.

According to The Guardian, Studio Ghibli president Koju Hoshino made the announcement at the film's recent debut in Italy, for which Miyazaki was not present. Making a deliberately short statement on Sunday ahead of a full press conference in Toyko next week, Hoshino said, "[Miyazaki] wants to say goodbye to all of you."

Miyazaki's most renowned works include 1988's My Neighbor Totoro, 1997's Princess Mononoke, 2001's Academy Award-winning Spirited Away and 2004's Howl's Moving Castle.

The Wind Rises, Miyazaki's eleventh and final feature film, is a fictionalized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II.
