Hoax Hunters #10 Review

hh10Hoax Hunters #10 is one of the best issues in this series so far. The mythology and world building of this series has added lots of layers to the simple “reality TV show that makes a hoax out of real monsters” premise. This is the fruit of that labor, a world populated with unique characters drawn together by horror, tragedy, and strength. If you haven't checked out this series, now is the perfect time to jump on to the Hoax Hunters train.

Writers Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley have worked hard to build a big narrative in Hoax Hunters. This isn't a goofy spoof of some ghost hunting TV series (although there are elements of that). Instead, Hoax Hunters feels a bit more like X-Files in all the best ways. They've done a great job fleshing out these characters, too, and while they have a long way to go before they become the next Mulder and Scully, there's some truly compelling stuff here.

Artist T-Rex Jones makes a huge splash in Hoax Hunters, giving the series something it sorely needed: atmosphere. It's not that Hoax Hunters ever looked bad, it certainly didn't, but it always felt like something was missing and it turned out that something was T-Rex Jones. His dark, gritty style gives a look to this world that we haven't seen before. The tired and broken characters look tired and broken; Hoax Hunters looks lived in, like everyone is at the end of their rope. It's hauntingly and gorgeous, a truly unique looking comic.
