Ian McKellen to Play Sherlock Holmes

From Magneto and Gandalf to... Sherlock Holmes? Sir Ian McKellen has agreed to play the world-famous detective in director Bill Condon's upcoming A Slight Trick of the Mind.

According to EW.com, the 74-year-old McKellen will assume the role of Sherlock in his later years. However, this version of the character wasn't penned by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but rather adapted from a 2006 novel by Mitch Cullin.

In A Slight Trick of the Mind, Sherlock is 93-years-old and retired in Sussex, where he is haunted by a case that escaped him a half-century ago. No longer accompanied by his old partner Watson, Sherlock must rely on his own wits -- which are not as sharp as they used to be -- to uncover the mystery.

A Slight Trick marks the first collaboration between McKellen and Condon since 1998's Gods and Monsters, which earned McKellen a Best Actor Oscar nod and won Condon the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
