Will Smith May Still Return for ID4 Sequel

Could Will Smith still reprise his Independence Day role as Captain Steven Hiller after all? The actor will soon begin talks with director Roland Emmerich to star in Independence Day 2 (tentatively titled ID Forever Part One).

In a recent interview with Digital Bits, Emmerich confirmed that discussions are now underway for Smith to return. "I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn't want to do it at first," Emmerich explained. "Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen."

Summer 2013's Biggest Box Office Flops

Previous reports said that Smith wouldn't come back because he was too expensive, while other stars like Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum have since confirmed their involvement. Did the failure of After Earth convince Smith to lower his asking price for the ID4 sequel? It's possible, though Emmerich is also coming off a box office bust in White House Down. In truth, both men would stand to gain a lot in reuniting.

In any case, ID Forever Part One will hit theaters on July 3, 2015.
