Dreamfall Chapters Details Revealed

It’s been a long wait for another game in the The Longest Journey universe. Now that writer and designer Ragnar Tørnquist is no longer busy with The Secret World at Funcom and instead working at Red Thread Games, Dreamfall Chapters is a priority.

Thanks to an interview on Polygon, we now know Chapters will involve three playable characters, which will include two female leads. And contrary to previous reports, Chapters will not be released in a traditional episodic format, but will launch as “books,” which based on Tørnquist's comments seem like they’ll be a little more substantial than typical adventure game episodes.

It was also revealed that Dreamfall Chapters will not feature an awkward combat system like Dreamfall did. As Tørnquist said, "A lot of the combat [in Dreamfall] was awful…In general, I wasn't happy with the controls in Dreamfall. It felt clunky, particularly on the PC. That's something we're fixing.”

With Chapters, the six person team at Red Thread plans to address the "infuriating cliffhangers" of Dreamfall, but will likely still leave some things open-ended to allow for the possibility of future games.

Red Thread is working to try and get the entire original voice cast back together, but may have to make some replacements. It sounds like funding could also be an issue. Red Thread will begin a Kickstarter campaign in early 2013 to try and help keep the studio funded throughout the development process. In an ideal scenario, Tørnquist would like to release Chapters without the need to go to a publisher. Assuming everything goes well, Tørnquist would like to expand the studio size to “17 or 18 employees”.

Tørnquist said, “We're making Chapters for fans of The Longest Journey and Dreamfall for fans of story-driven games and adventures, for PC gamers. That's really not the best pitch to a publisher — but it is the best pitch to our core audience."

No release date was given for the first installment of Dreamfall Chapters.
