Superboy #15 Review

There’s a part of me that enjoys the throwback nature of this comic’s silly plot. It has Superboy and Superman at odds with one another, some truly over-the-top visuals, and heaps of grossly overstated dialogue and captions and even some thought balloons thrown in for good measure. If feels like one of those old school funny books you'd find in your grandparent's attic that just causes you to laugh at how ludicrous comics used to be without even trying. Unfortunately, this comic was produced in all seriousness with no kitsch intended, and it’s actually quite bad.

The first thing that’ll pop out to anyone with eyeballs is how awfully mismatched the art looks. With a whole slew of artists on board that have starkly different styles, every few pages will unhinge you from the reading experience. Reading this comic felt like watching a TV where the signal keeps cutting out. One artist has a style with heavy lines while another uses creative paneling while yet another frames all of his panels with excess white space. On one page Superman’s collar is colored red instead of blue, and on another his cape magically appears when before he wasn’t wearing one. It’s a visual clustercuss.

The actual plot involves Superboy being saved by Superman after whatever fatal thingy H’el did to him last issue. Instead of a dynamic interaction between the two Super guys, we must suffer through a banal and insignificant back-and-forth that fails to develop their relationship in any meaningful way. While reading, you’ll be treated to an overabundance of editorial notes that rival Navi for most annoying thing ever, each pointing you to a different comic book to read in order to understand just what’s going on.

Well, I’ll tell you what. I’ve caught up on every single issue of every Super-book and I can say no matter how much you’ve read, H’el on Earth sucks.
