Comic-Con: Cup O' Joe Panel Recap

Joe Quesada hosted his annual Cup O’ Joe panel with a whole panel of special guests at this year’s Comic-Con, revealing tidbits about upcoming Marvel events and answering fans questions. Guests included Axel Alonso, Steve Wacker, Brain Bendis, C.B. Cebulski, Rick Remender and Sam Humphries. ”We’re gonna show you some clips, show you some slides and then the time is yours. You guys can ask whatever questions you want,” Quesada said to the audience.

Things started off with Bendis talking about an upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy story arc that would feature new Marvel addition Angela. “It’ll feature Gamora versus Angela,” Bendis said to loud cheers from the audience. He noted that Angela’s role in the Marvel Universe would become more apparent in the series.

Next, the panel touched on Hawkeye. Wacker thanked the fans for supporting the very different title. “We really owe it all to you guys,” Wacker said. At that moment, an audience member shouted his love for Pizza Dog, to which Wacker responded, “If you love Pizza Dog, wait ‘til you meet Burrito Cat!”

Joe Quesada then announced Wolverine Origin 2 by Kieron Gillen and Adam Kubert coming in November. He said the series would take Wolverine’s origin further and dig into the story deeper.

The panel then opened up to audience questions and answers.

When asked about the number of titles Marvel put out and whether they feared they might oversaturate the market Quesada answered, “You guys dictate what we publish. You vote with your dollars and vote with your feet. They titles you want more of we make more of. It’s simple supply and demand.”

Axel Alonso noted that fans shouldn’t feel pressure to buy all the books featuring a certain characters. He pointed out that there were two very different Wolverine monthly titles and said that fans should buy the one that has the tone they enjoy. “You don’t have to buy both, but we like it when you do,” he laughed.

Another fan brought up Marvel Unlimited and praised the digital service but wondered why certain issues from runs might be missing. “Marvels gone through so many production hands and sometimes we can’t our hands easily on the files,” editor Nick Lowe answered. “We are committed to filling all those holes.”

The next fan asked how the Marvel creators influenced the Marvel movies and whether their input helped make the Marvel movies so great. “It’s all us, nothing to do with Robert Downy Jr.” Bendis laughed. Quesada added that whenever possible, Marvel tried to involve creator input on characters being used in other mediums.

When asked about the motivation of the Savage Wolverine title, Alonso said they wanted to put out a very different kind of Wolverine title. “Frank Cho’s Wolverine was such a breath of fresh air.” The other creators were quick to jump in praise Cho’s work and point out that he would be drawing the first issue of the upcoming X-Men crossover, Battle of the Atom.

A young audience member asked if there were any Nick Fury stories in the works and Quesada answered, “There are so Nick Fury stories coming up, with both Nick Furys. It’s a good year to be a Nick Fury fan, or bad year, depending on how you look at it.”

On the subject of the time travel and working with the sliding timeline of Marvel heroes Bendis said “We have fun with it. You know, the All-New X-Men come from the 60s but not really the 60s so we just poke fun at it. We had a pretty intense argument about Pizza Bagels the other day.”

When asked about the possibility of a Daredevil movie since Marvel now got the rights to the character back Quesada said he hoped something would come to pass soon. “We just got the rights back, so it’ll be down the road. Daredevil is my all-time favorite, so I would love that,” he added.
