One of the bigger announcements to come out of C2E2 this past spring was the news that Dark Horse Comics has acquired the rights to the Halo franchise. The new arrangement kicks off next month with the release of Halo: Initiation #1. Initiation is a prequel mini-series to Halo 4, focusing on Sarah Palmer as she works her way up the ranks of the new Spartan-IV program.
But the Halo universe is too big for one mini-series. Accordingly, Dark Horse revealed the next stage of their Halo plans at SDCC yesterday. Halo: Escalation is a new series that picks up where Halo 4 left off. Escalation also has the distinction of being the first ongoing Halo comic book. The series will again star Spartan Palmer, as well as Thomas Lasky, the Arbiter, and various other Halo mainstays. The book will be written by Halo 4 lead writer Chris Schlerf. Omar Francia (Mass Effect) will provide interior art for the first three-issue story arc, while Anthony Palumbo (Dragon Age) is handling the cover art.
Escalation will kick off with a new conflict that arises when the Arbiter attempts to broker a peace treaty with the Brutes. An attempted sabotage of the peace talks forces the crew of the UNSC Infinity to intervene.
“There are many, many more stories we want to tell in the Halo universe than we’d ever be able to explore solely through the games,” said Schlerf in Dark Horse's press release. “Having the chance to see those adventures come to life on a monthly basis feels like the ultimate realization of an awful lot of dreaming on our part.”
Halo: Initiation #1 is scheduled to ship on August 14, while Escalation #1 is slated for release on December 11.
