Comic-Con: We've Seen the Korra: Book Two Premiere

Fans of The Legend of Korra have long been waiting for the premiere of Book Two. When the Nickelodeon series came to San Diego Comic-Con last year, we got our first look at the highly anticipated second run, including some rough animatics and concept art. One year later, and we still hadn't seen the start of Book Two -- but that all changed today at Korra's packed panel in Ballroom 20, where fans were treated to the complete first episode, Chapter One: "Rebel Spirit," in all its glory.

On hand to debut the season premiere were Korra co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, co-EP Joaquim Dos Santos, and voice stars Janet Varney (Korra), David Faustino (Mako) and PJ Byrne (Bolin).

This kind of goes without saying, but not surprisingly, Chapter One was freaking awesome. Without giving too much away, it seems that Book Two will have a very distinct look and feel from both Korra: Book One and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Story-wise, there’s a lot to digest, but as previously reported, we do get a good sense of what the characters have been up to in the last six months. Interestingly, most of Chapter One took place in the Southern Water Tribe, so it seems there's going to be a decided break from Republic City for some of the characters, which is definitely exciting. And, as always, the animation, action and comedy were all top-notch.

Following the Chapter One screening, Konietzko and DiMartino made one last exciting announcement: The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun will be voicing the guest role of Wan, the very first Avatar, in two episodes of Book Two.

According to the creators, these episodes will take place 10,000 years before Korra's time, as Wan begins his path as a teenage explorer and a skilled bender who uses his cunning and courage to try to bring balance between mankind and the spirits. His quest ultimately leads him to becoming the first Avatar. We also got to check out some never-before-seen artwork from these episodes, which featured a slightly different visual style reminiscent of Asian ink wash paintings and woodblock prints.

So when can you see The Legend of Korra: Book Two? Well, for all we saw, we still don’t have a specific date quite yet -- however, the creators have set September 2013 as the official premiere window.

Last but not least, the creators also screened an action-packed sizzle reel, which is now available to watch at Korra's official Tumblr. (Also be sure to keep an eye out for the lanky, long-haired and bearded Wan, who can be spotted briefly in the footage.)

Stay tuned for more Korra news, as well as a full review of Chapter One: "Rebel Spirit" later next week after the show.
