During an earnings call today, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that next-gen console pre-orders, according to some retailers, "two times what they saw at the last generation launch. At the moment they are really getting more pre-orders than what they saw before.”
Best Buy and GameStop recently sold out their pre-orders, while Amazon claimed a massive increase in pre-purchases following E3 2013.
In discussing next-gen console sales expectations, Ubisoft also detailed the lack of parity between its Wii U software sales compared to other platforms. Its Wii U titles for the past three months account for just 3% of the company's total sales. Its most recent release, it should be noted, was Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth on December 4, 2012. Guillemot recently said that Zombi U -- arguably Ubisoft's biggest Wii U title -- was not profitable, and that a sequel was not in the cards.
In addition, Ubisoft said it's not interested in creating games that aren't sustainable as franchises. Perhaps that's why Ubisoft's current Wii U lineup looks so much stronger than in recent months. Splinter Cell Blacklist and Rayman Legends could give Ubisoft a Wii U sales boost in the next quarter, while Watch Dogs, Just Dance 2014, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag follow in the fall. Also, its licensed adaptation of The Smurfs 2 releases on Wii U this month, for what that's worth.
Pre-orders for both consoles are still available at numerous retailers:
PlayStation 4

- Walmart.com - $399.96
- Best Buy - $399.99
Xbox One

- Best Buy - $499.99
