Hunger #2 Review

HUNGER2013002-DC11-LR-4e1bd-674x1024Where there’s Batman you’ll find Robin. Where there’s Superman, Lois Lane. And where there’s Galactus? Silver Surfer, of course! With Galactus entering the Ultimate Universe and merging with its own incarnation of the world devourer, Gah Lak Tus, it’s up to a cosmically-powered Rick Jones to team up with the Silver Surfer to stop him. While this certainly is a large scale story, writer Joshua Hale Fialkov keeps the telling tight and personal by making Rick a relatable and super cool guy who really just wants to go get a burger.

While this new eviler Galactus with his eviler color scheme is clearly a big threat for the Ultimate Universe, he’s certainly not at his most compelling here. With so much creativity going on in the Ultimate Universe, you’d expect a more interesting twist than the standard “I am Galactus and I hunger” routine. While it is entertaining watching Rick and Surfer learn about Galactus’ modus operandi, it’s all old news to any fan of Marvel Comics, so by issue #2 in this 4 issue mini-series, not much new ground has been covered.

Leonard Kirk is absolutely killing it on art, though. He has a clean yet dynamic style that helps fit this book nicely into the aesthetic of the rest of the Ultimate Universe. There’s one double page spread of Galactus that’s just mind boggling. Kirk's use of scale and epicness literally made me yell “WOAH!” and hold the comic out at arm’s length to take the whole thing in.

Joshua writes for IGN. If Pokemon, Game of Thrones, or Green Lantern are frequently used words in your vocabulary, then you’ll want to follow him on Twitter and IGN.
