We've known for a while now that Vin Diesel will likely be starring as the tree-monster Groot in Marvel's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and today the actor confirmed plans to do motion capture for the character alongside voice-work, although an official announcement from the studio is yet to drop.
What was most interesting, however, was the further revelation that Diesel originally met with Marvel to discuss the possibility of starring in a new film that would potentially launch Marvel's Phase Three.
"I kind of take my hat off to them for being so creative and thinking outside the box," said the actor to THR while promoting his latest movie, Riddick. "We were initially talking about a fresh IP, that was the focus of our conversation, was a fresh IP that would come out in 2016 and 2017 and would potentially launch a third phase."
Diesel explained that after he attended Comic-Con to promote Riddick, it became apparent to him that his fans wanted a more immediate Vin Diesel/Marvel collaboration.
"With my schedule, it was almost impossible to imagine I could do anything immediate," said Diesel, who's currently one of the busiest working actors in Hollywood. "I guess after they watched The Iron Giant or whatever, they came up with this idea of taking the strangest Marvel character, or the strangest Marvel character that's ever hit film, and thought what I could do with that with motion capture and with my voice."
What 'fresh IP' could Diesel be talking about? Edgar Wright's Ant-Man will officially launch Phase Three, but there's a chance Diesel could be talking about something else entirely; Marvel's still got 50-odd years of comic books to draw upon, after all.
