Despite a tweet sent out by Sony suggesting otherwise, Grand Theft Auto V is not coming to PlayStation 4.
Earlier today, the Sony UK Twitter account replied to a fan talking about his excitement for Grand Theft Auto V. The tweet read in part, "GTA V is going to be amazing, especially on the PS4!" It also retweeted a message from that same fan which states the game will be available on PS4. As the game has only been confirmed for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, this raised some eyebrows.
As it turns out, this was all a simple mistake on the part of those running the Twitter account. A follow-up tweet sent out two hours later stated, "Apologies for the typo about GTA V. It's due for release on PS3 on September 17th."
Rockstar has given no indication it will bring the highly anticipated sequel to any other platforms, although a job listing found in July did suggest a PC port could be in the works. If it does plan on bringing GTA V to any other platforms, it's not likely to say so until well after the game's launch on current-gen consoles, as doing so before then could negatively affect sales of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.
This isn't the first issue to have arisen involving GTA V and Sony. The company had to apologize earlier this week after it allowed assets from the game to be leaked, resulting in spoilers being published online. Among these was the game's soundtrack.
Grand Theft Auto V will be available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 -- and only those two, at least for the time being -- on September 17. A 500GB PlayStation 3 bundle that includes a copy of the game and a 30-day trial for PlayStation Plus will also land on that day.
Chris Pereira is a freelance writer who is likely to buy GTA V two or three times, should it eventually be released on PC and next-gen consoles. Check out what he's saying on Twitter and follow him on IGN.
