A Visual History of RPG Classes

Each new Final Fantasy presents an all-new cast of characters that are unconnected to each game that came before. And yet, even though the series lacks one main mascot, strong visual ties persist through each new installment thanks to the influence of the original game’s iconic character classes.

Whether by the force of nostalgia or just genuine distinctive design, we’ve now seen over a quarter-century of continued reference to the original Light Warriors’ style. Take a look:

01-BlackMage

03-WhiteMage

05-RedMage

02-Fighter

04-BlackBelt

06-Thief

So, what do you think? Has Square Enix just been paying respectful homage to that original Final Fantasy again and again for over 25 years now, or are modern games' character designs being held back by these ties to the past? Would it make sense for a White Mage to wear anything other than that traditional triangle-fringed garb, or for thieves to not be designated by bandanas? Sound off in the Comments box below!
