Borderlands 2 ‘On Track’ To Be Highest-Selling 2K Game Ever

During an earnings report for its 2013 fiscal year, Take-Two (parent company of 2K) revealed that six million copies of Borderlands 2 have been shipped to retailers to date. According to Take-Two president Karl Slatoff, Gearbox’s shooter is on track to be the highest-selling release in the history of the 2K label (which doesn’t include Rockstar Games).

Slatoff noted that sales of Borderlands are expected to continue to rise, as the game’s Psycho DLC is coming tomorrow and its final campaign DLC is coming in June.

Take-Two also revealed that Max Payne 3 has shipped 4 million copies to date, a million more than the three million shipped as of May 2012. According to Take-Two, “The largest contributors to net revenue in fiscal year 2013 were Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13, BioShock Infinite, Max Payne 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Red Dead Redemption.”

Still, looking ahead, Grand Theft Auto V will mark the biggest part of Take-Two’s upcoming earnings, with Rockstar expected to represent 65% of upcoming revenue (with 2K representing the additional 35%). Upcoming 2K titles include WWE 2K14 on October 29th, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified on August 20th and NBA 2K14 on October 1st.

Overall, Take-Two earned $1.214 billion in net revenue in its 2013 fiscal year, up from $825 million in 2012. Strong sales of BioShock Infinite are partially responsible, while a 192% increase in digital revenue compared to last year also contributed.

“2013 is the 20th anniversary of Take-Two’s founding and, today, our Company is better positioned for success than at any other time in its history,” Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said. “With Rockstar Games launching Grand Theft Auto V in September, fiscal 2014 is poised to be one of our best years ever. Looking ahead, we have an extensive pipeline of next-generation and emerging platform titles in development, including both new intellectual property and releases from our proven franchises.”
