The Enemy Within continues in Captain Marvel #13, where Carol Danvers is joined by an all-star cast of Avengers and assorted allies as she inches closer to the man behind her recent troubles, her old buddy Yon-Rogg (the buddy was sarcastic). Series writer Kelly Sue DeConnick continues to do what she does best as Captain Marvel’s personality shines through the page, even with her wings clipped.
As brightly as Carol’s personality blazes, issue #13 isn’t overly exciting, even with the arrival of a few nasty Kree Sentries. There’s a sense of needing to get from point A to point B, and DeConnick tries to make the ride as fun as possible. We have appearances by Thor, Bruce Banner, and Carol’s incessantly surly neighbors to liven up the proceedings, while Yon-Rogg (or the Magnitron as he’s calling himself these days) hovers menacingly throughout.
It’s clearly a middle issue – I call this “The Two Towers Syndrome” – but DeConnick does her best to keep things interesting. The issue’s weakest element is the art – Scott Hepburn, the main artist, puts in a solid effort, but the book continues to be plagued with the inconsistencies that have marred the previous handful of issues. Even here, there’s an abrupt shift of artist (to Gerardo Sandoval) for a few pages that’s noticeable enough to be jarring.
Thankfully, “The Two Towers Syndrome” shows signs of letting up as Carol homes in on her elusive attacker. DeConnick has done a solid job of building up towards the looming climax of The Enemy Within, and if her previous work is any indication, it won’t be one to miss.
