Ethan Hawke Defends Nic Cage's Work

While Nicolas Cage is obviously renowned for his numerous acting achievements, the performer has gotten somewhat of a bum rap in recent years for a handful of... ahem, shall we say less than commendable roles in feature films.

However, in a recent "Ask Me Anything" chat on Reddit, actor Ethan Hawke was asked about actors he looked up to, and one of the first he mentioned was Cage. "I'm kind of obsessed with Nic Cage," Hawke wrote on Wednesday. "He's the only actor since Marlon Brando that's actually done anything new with the art of acting; he's successfully taken us away from an obsession with naturalism into a kind of presentation style of acting that I imagine was popular with the old troubadours."

Hawke continued, "If I could erase [Cage's] bottom half bad movies, and only keep his top half movies, he would blow everyone else out of the water. He's put a little too much water in his beer, but he is still one of the great actors of our time. And working with him was an absolute pleasure."

Cage, of course, has taken his criticisms with stride. He's even acknowledged (and enjoyed!) his now-famous "supercut" YouTube video "Nicolas Cage Losing His S---," which depicts all of Cage's on-screen freak-outs. But that still hasn't seemed to sway the actor, nor his compatriot Hawke in the slightest.
