Wild Blue Yonder is a big book. It's an apocalyptic tale that takes place in the skies above a scorched earth. It features epic dogfights, brutal jetpack battles, and a dog wearing aviator goggles. Really, this is an action book, through and through, a big spectacle of explosions and violence. Wild Blue Yonder is just plain cool; the kind of world you'll want to revisit again and again.
Mike Raicht, Zach Howard, and Austin Harrison are credited with creating the story of Wild Blue Yonder, and they deserve a hearty pat on the back for that. Raicht provides the script and it's mostly a smooth ride. The opening commits the sin of just dumping unneeded background info of the world on us, but once you get past that it really takes flight. The characters are a little hollow at this point, but the action is so much damn fun you'll hardly notice that you care more about the dog in goggles than you do any of his human counterparts.
The real star of the show here is the art. Zack Howard and colorist Nelson Daniel just crush it. Wild Blue Yonder #1 is stunning beyond belief. The dirt and grit of the world clings to the characters. This is a lived-in universe, a place where you can see the wear and tear on nearly everything. The book's first aerial battle is amazing, as well. Wild Blue Yonder hits all the right notes and is a book that we'll be keeping a very close eye on. Fantastic first issue.
