Swamp Thing #22 Review

Swamp-Thing_22_Full-665x1024If you think a story arc called “The Whiskey Tree” sounds ridiculous then just wait until you actually read it. Charles Soule is one freaky writer and it only takes this issue to show you why he was chosen to write Swamp Thing. He does an excellent job getting you to understand the character and feel for him, and then he goes and puts him through one of the most hellish and twisted plots imaginable. Seriously, this is some messed up stuff. Makes you wonder what Soule is like after a little too much whiskey.

Artist Kano does an amazing job with his depiction of Swamp Thing and his powers. Swamp Thing looks different depending on what plants surround him, so his look is ever-changing. Watching him sprout a single eye and ear to use a faraway tree to spy with is both humorous and creepy, and then watching him pull his entire body through is another spectacle altogether. And when the scary stuff starts to happen, oh man, hold onto your hat.

This issue features John Constantine, a character who appears in every one of DC’s Dark books whether you like it or not. I wasn’t keen on having him guest star in Swamp Thing, but Soule has such a knack for writing true to character that I pretty much loved him by the end. This definitely isn’t as humorous as Soule’s previous issues of Swamp Thing, but when the horror is this good, it’s best to just enjoy the thrill ride.

Joshua writes for IGN. If Pokemon, Game of Thrones, or Green Lantern are frequently used words in your vocabulary, then you’ll want to follow him on Twitter and IGN.
