Archer and Armstrong #10 Review

Month after month, Archer and Armstrong is not only one of the best Valiant titles, it's one of the best comic books out there, period. This comic embraces fun above all else, and that's what makes it succeed. There are plenty of other serious, dark, and grim superhero books on the stands filled with brooding characters. Archer and Armstrong is the alternative, a book that is epic in scope but downright silly and proud of it. It quotes Emily Dickinson on one page and has a woman pulling dual machine guns out of her fake pregnant belly and shouting “It's twins!” on the next. It's all over the place in all the best ways.

Fred Van Lente pushes each issue of Archer and Armstrong more and more into the larger Valiant universe – Project Rising Spirit continues to factor heavily into the story – while still keeping the heart and soul of this book in place. You can read Archer and Armstrong without venturing out into the other Valiant titles (although you really should read some of the other Valiant titles). In other words, Van Lente is doing superhero comics the way they should be done.

Artist Pere Perez steps in this issue and knocks it out of the park. He's the sole artist on the book and definitely nails the tone and feel right from the get-go. The characters look great, the action is frantic and fun, and the humor is spot on. Hopefully, Perez sticks around for a while because his style fits this series like a glove. Archer and Armstrong is the comic book we deserve, people. Give it all your monies.
