Shadowman #7 Review

Shadowman continues to play the long game, building on the increasing tension between the Abettors and the forces of the Deadside. Master Darque is building an army and readying an invasion. As an individual issue, Shadowman #7 doesn't quite reach the heights of last month's spectacular #0. It's still good, but Shadowman himself seems to be doing less and less with each issue. We're ready for the big show! Ready for the war! Let's get to it already.

There's some weird moments in this issue. The conflict between Shadowman and the rest of the Abettors feels manufactured and out of nowhere. Justin Jordan is a better writer than that, and you can clearly see it in the scenes that follow. That opening scene just sticks out and seems forced. It doesn't stop the issue from being good, but this series seems to be heading in a downwards trajectory. Quality slips a little with each issue.

Shadowman's biggest problem is its art. Neil Edwards is not a bad artist by any stretch of the imagination, but his straightforward style doesn't fit with this series. It's too cartoony and lacks the gritty detail that this horror tale needs. The scenes that take place on the Deadside look better than the world of the living, but they still aren't a match made in heaven. Edwards has a great style and look, it just isn't gelling with Shadowman.
