One of the criticisms of the new DC Universe coming out of the New 52 relaunch is that much of the revered history between characters has been relatively wiped clean in this new continuity. To rectify that, DC Comics has announced a brand new ongoing series titled Batman/Superman that will explore the first meeting of the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel in the New 52.
Set for release in June, Batman/Superman will serve as the DC Comics debut for acclaimed writer Greg Pak (Magneto: Testament, Incredible Hulk, X-Treme X-Men). In addition, artist Jae Lee -- another typically Marvel creator -- will be handling interiors, hot off his stint on Before Watchmen: Ozymandias.
In an interview with USA Today, Pak said, "It is a real thrill, and it's particularly a thrill because we're being given some real leeway to do some really important storytelling with these characters. It really defines some great things and to depict some really key moments for them."
The announcement explains that there will indeed be a mutual threat that brings the duo together, but it won't be immediately apparent. Of the Batman and Superman dynamic, Pak said, "What would your reaction be if you saw a guy running around in a bat costume in the dead of night attacking people for the first time? And what would your reaction be if you met an alien who could crush steel in his bare hands for the first time? These guys are going to have very different immediate impressions of each other than we're used to seeing with these characters."
While Justice League and Action Comics have shown some of the past history of these characters, Batman/Superman will directly explore the earliest history of these heroes -- that means Superman will be in the t-shirt/jeans Springsteen combo that we saw him wear in the early days of Action Comics.
