Sony Will Not Cut Price of PS Vita Outside of Japan

Earlier this week, Sony announced that it would be cutting the price of the PS Vita in Japan to from 25,000 Yen to 19,980 Yen — or roughly $215/£140 — but it seems those savings will not be offered in other regions. According to PlayStation's Shuhei Yoshida, the company has no plans to cut the price of the PS Vita outside of Japan.

"When you compare the pricing of PS Vita across regions because of the value of the Yen, in Japan the system has been priced the highest," Yoshida said. "We have been selling the PS Vita for 25,000 Yen — that's more than $250 when you compare the exchange rate. It's a region-by-region based decision, always."

Yoshida along with other PlayStation representatives went on to say that the company also has no plans to cut the cost of the PS Vita's memory cards, which have been criticized for their exorbitantly high cost to capacity ratio compared to other mediums. The cheapest variant, the 4GB version, costs $19.99 in the U.S., while the maximum capacity 32GB model has an MSRP of $99.
