Tom Hardy to Star in Splinter Cell Movie

Tom Hardy will star in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, the Ubisoft film adaptation of the game franchise.

Hardy, who of course co-starred as Bane in this summer's The Dark Knight Rises, will play Sam Fisher, a special ops agent for the organization known as Echelon.

Who Is Sam Fisher?

Collider reported earlier today, and Variety now confirms along with this casting news, that Eric Warren Singer (The International) will write the script.

Hardy brings a certain prestige to the game-to-film genre that has often been missing in the past. This tracks with Ubisoft's other big property currently in development, Assassin's Creed, which Michael Fassbender will co-produce and star in for New Regency and Fox. Splinter Cell doesn't have a studio yet, though Ubisoft has already begun talks with Warner Bros. and Paramount.

"Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills," said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures. "His involvement in the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and ... we're confident he'll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story ... while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans."

Rayman Slowing Beyond Good & Evil 2 Development

The sequel to Beyond Good & Evil is still being made, but being held up by the development of Rayman titles according to Ubisoft's CEO.

Speaking to Polygon, Yves Guillemot explained that the brain behind both Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil, Michael Ancel, was having to devote all his time to completing the upcoming Rayman Legends at the moment.

What's very important is that Michel Ancel is kind of doing too many things at the same time.

"What's very important is that Michel Ancel is kind of doing too many things at the same time," he explained. "He was working on Rayman Origins last year, and he's working a lot on Rayman Legends this year. So, you know, when he does that, he kind of puts too much of his time on the other projects that he has.

"So the fact is, that working on Legends is slowing the process on Beyond Good & Evil 2.

"It's really a game that we've been working, we have worked on, and is a game that we want to do. But there are so many things that have to be done that, you know, this one is going to come in line at one point, but at the moment Michel is really on Rayman Legends."

While we still haven't seen much of the game, we do know that it's being developed for the next generation of consoles and there have been reports that part of the game will take place in a shanty town.

Assassin's Creed Anthology Dated and Priced

Following on from yesterday's leaked retail listing on Amazon France, Ubisoft has confirmed the existence of the Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition, and detailed when we'll be able to get hold of it.

The Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition will be available for Xbox 360 and PS3 exclusively through Amazon in both Europe from November 29 for €150, and the UK from November 30 for £119.99.

Unfortunately for those of you Stateside, it appears Ubisoft has no plans to bring the Anthology Edition to America. A representative for the company told IGN that the bundle is not currently scheduled for release in the US.

The Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition will include include Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - The Da Vinci Edition, Assassin's Creed: Revelations - The Ottoman Edition and the just-released Assassin's Creed III. The bundle will also include all the expansion packs and DLC for the Assassin's Creed games, as well as the Assassin's Creed III Season Pass, which provides full access to all forthcoming downloadable content for the game.

Also included in the pack are five lithographs, a steel book and a collector’s box. For more details on the Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition, check out the original story.

Assassin's Creed Anthology Confirmed

Update: Ubisoft has now confirmed the existence of the bundle to IGN but has yet to comment on platform, pricing and release date.

Every console game in the Assassin's Creed series will be released in one box, according to a new listing on Amazon France.

The Assassin's Creed Anthology Edition is slated to include Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and the just-released Assassin's Creed III.

The listing also states that all singleplayer and multiplayer bonus DLC created for the games will be included, whether it be extra maps or bonus missions. Judging from the promotional image leaked below, it seems that the Assassin's Creed III Season Pass will also be part of the package.

According to the image, the pack will include "all Assassin's Creed games ever released on Xbox 360". Does this mean the bundle will only be available on Microsoft's platform?

IGN reached out to Ubisoft for a statement, but was told the company wasn't ready to comment on the leak. Given how Amazon France has previously proved reliable in outing both Call of Duty: Black Ops II and also the Killzone Trilogy bundle, it's a safe bet that this package is also legit.

Assassin’s Creed III Pre-Orders Break Ubisoft Record

Ubisoft has announced that Assassin’s Creed III is the most pre-ordered game in company history. According to Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed III pre-orders have “more than doubled” the number of pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed Revelations, which was the previous pre-order record holder.

GameStop president Tony Bartel said pre-orders are “nearly 100% higher than last year, putting the game on track to be one of the top titles of 2012” and Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key added that “this impressive pre-order mark is just a hint of the game’s potential.”

Assassin’s Creed III will hit stores on October 30th, with a Wii U version to follow on November 18th. For more on Assassin’s Creed III, read about the first downloadable content and Season Pass and our interview with associate producer Julien Laferrière.

Ubisoft Sues Black Eyed Peas for $1 Million

Ubisoft has sued The Black Eyed Peas for breach of contract. As reported by Courthouse News, the suit is for $1 million and alleges that Ubisoft created “an iPad and iPhone version of a popular Wii game” -- namely, The Black Eyed Peas Experience -- that the band “refused to accept, reject or pay for.”

The suit is against a group called BEP Music that holds a trademark for 2011’s The Black Eyed Peas Experience, which hit Xbox 360 and Wii. The suit alleges that in June 2011 BEP Music “entered into a license agreement” that “licensed to Ubisoft the exclusive, worldwide right to use, among other things, the names and likenesses of a music group and its members...to develop, produce, and distribute a video game...on all existing and future handheld and home consoles and iOS platforms, including the iPhone and iPad." Ubisoft claims that it submitted the game to BEP Music for approval in March of this year and the group “never responded to Ubisoft's request for approval of the IOS game within the requisite ten business days, or ever. Thereafter, Ubisoft continued to repeatedly request, both orally and in writing” that BEP approve the game.

"Since March 2012, and despite Ubisoft's repeated requests, BEP Music has breached the contract by failing and refusing to either approve or disapprove the IOS game in writing or otherwise,” Ubisoft claims. “Ubisoft has performed all of the obligations required of it under the contract, except as those obligations that have been excused by BEP Music's conduct or by operation of law. At the time of BEP Music's breach of contract, Ubisoft had spent 181,000 Euros (approximately $233,000) in developing the iOS game. As a direct and proximate result of BEP Music's breach of contract, Ubisoft has suffered damages in an amount in excess of $1,000,000, which not only includes Ubisoft's out-of-pocket development costs, but also the profits Ubisoft has lost and will continue to lose as a result of BEP Music's breach of contract."

The Wii and Xbox 360 version of The Black Eyed Peas Experience was released in November 2011 and “is currently still being distributed pursuant to the contract and has thus far been successful for Ubisoft,” according to the suit. We’ve reached out to Ubisoft about the lawsuit and will update with any comment we receive. Until then, you can read our The Black Eyed Peas Experience review.

Assassin’s Creed III DLC: George Washington is King

Ubisoft has announced new downloadable content for Assassin’s Creed III. Set in an alternate version of history, The Tyranny of King Washington is a single-player campaign that will be told through multiple downloadable content packs and features George Washington becoming king of America.

“As the revolution comes to a close, a new and most unexpected enemy emerges,” Ubisoft explains. “Driven by the desire to secure the fate of the colonies, the greatest hero of the revolution, George Washington, succumbs to the temptation of infinite power. The new King is born and his reign leaves no one untouched. To return freedom to the land our new hero must dethrone a tyrant he once called friend.”

The story will be told through three episodic content packs, all of which will be available by purchasing the Assassin’s Creed III Season Pass, which will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC for $29.99 (2400 Microsoft Points). The Pass will offer access to five content packs in all, including single-player content as well as maps and characters for multiplayer. According to Ubisoft, purchasing the Season Pass will account for a 25% savings versus buying packs individually, and Season Pass owners will have access to content one week ahead of other players.

“History is our playground – and AC teams have always loved playing with historical facts and their consequences as a way to better understand a time period,” said Ubisoft executive producer Sebastien Puel said of the Washington content. “While Assassin’s Creed III concentrates on history as it happens, we wanted to take some liberties with this DLC and tell you how things ‘could have happened.’”

Assassin’s Creed III is less than 30 days away, hitting Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 30th, followed by a Wii U version on November 18th and a PC version on November 23rd. The downloadable content will “also be available for the Wii U,” Ubisoft said, but no specific timeframe was revealed.

Ubisoft Opens New Performance Capture Studio

Ubisoft has opened a new “world-class performance capture studio” in Toronto that will work on future projects, including Splinter Cell: Blacklist. The facility is state-of-the-art and aims to “create deeper characters, more immersive storytelling and more filmic, actor-driven games” through voice, facial and body performance capture. All actors will be captured at the same time, allowing performances to feel more like film.

The studio includes a 2,000 square foot performance space to allow multiple actors to perform at once, as well as 80 high-resolution Vicon T160 motion capture cameras. The facility will also use wireless helmet cameras for accurate facial capture, with footage synched in real time to voice and body capture. A sound stage and rigging beams that allow for stunt performances are also available to capture “dynamic, physical scenes for games.”

“We are extremely proud to unveil a performance capture studio in Toronto after just two years of operation in the city,” said Ubisoft Toronto and Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat. “This is about more than just the creation of a cutting-edge facility. It’s about Ubisoft transforming our approach to storytelling with a focus on acting talent and the delivery of the highest-quality performance output for our cinematics and animation teams. The studio also is a testament to our confidence in the talent in Ontario to deliver some of the best performance capture in the industry for games.”

In addition to Blacklist, the studio will contribute to capture for future Ubisoft projects from all 26 of its worldwide studios. Ubisoft Toronto will also partner with Screen Industries and Research Training Center of Sheridan College “to identify, define and pursue research projects in the field of virtual production to reach new levels of excellence.”

Ubisoft originally announced plans to expand to Toronto in July 2009. Original Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond was later chosen to head the studio. Raymond said in 2010 that Toronto was working on a Splinter Cell game (later revealed to be Blacklist) in addition to an unannounced title.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist was announced at E3 and blends the fast-paced style of 2010’s Splinter Cell Conviction with classic Splinter Cell gameplay, including the return of Spies vs. Mercs. For more, read our impressions from E3.

Ubisoft's Uplay May Sell Third-Party Games

Ubisoft has revealed it may add titles from other publishers to its Uplay app in the future.

Speaking with MCV, the company's Stephanie Perotti revealed that whilst Uplay currently only offers the company's own PC titles, this may all change in the future in a bid to challenge EA's Origin service and Valve's Steam.

"We remain open to opportunities," she said. "Right now, we’re starting the service with our own games, but as we go forward, we plan to potentially add other titles."

Though Uplay first launched in 2009 as an achievement tracking service that allowed players to use points to unlock DLC and extras in Ubisoft's other titles, it was only with last month's revamp that it became possible to download games directly. That update also saw the addition of friends lists and chat systems, bringing it in line with what's on offer in Steam and Origin.

Perotti added that this is just the beginning though, and promised further changes were on the way to re-incorporate the best bits of the old design with the new digital distribution platform.

"The plan for UPlay goes beyond digital distribution," said Perotti.

"We continue to evolve the service across all platforms, including PC, console and mobile. The more Ubisoft games you play, the more rewards you can get, as well as several online services that players would expect."

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online “On Hold” For Wii U

Ubisoft has confirmed that the Wii U version of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online has been temporarily put on hold. In an interview with VideoGamer, producer Theo Sanders discussed the team’s decision to focus “completely on the PC version.”

"As of right now, the entire Ghost Recon team is focused on the PC version only," Sanders said. "The Wii U version is on hold. If in the future we have an opportunity to address it again, we'll make future announcements.”

As for the notion that this development has something to do with Nintendo’s online plans or Wii U hardware issues, Sanders was quick to debunk such speculation. "It's not a reaction to anything specific happening to [Wii U]," he said. "It was a really fun, cool platform to develop for. But you realize once you launch an online service that it's an all-consuming effort, so we really wanted to have all hands on deck. It was the same dev team working on both SKUs, and [we] really wanted to focus on doing the PC version right.”

While this may be disappointing, don’t rule out the possibility of Ghost Recom Online hitting consoles sometime down the line. "It's hard to say how the future will go for Ghost Recon Online," Sanders said. "I think in the future as different platforms evolve towards service models and towards being really online-driven, community-driven platforms, then we'll definitely be looking at what our options are.”

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Announced

Ubisoft has announced Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Set to hit Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC in early 2013, Gunslinger “is a real homage to the Wild West tales” that lets players “live the epic and violent journey of a ruthless bounty hunter onto the trail of the West’s most notorious outlaws.” Like previous entries in the franchise, Gunslinger is being developed by Techland.

Ubisoft says Gunslinger will unveil “the untold truth behind some of the greatest legends of the Old West,” including Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, Jesse James and more. The game will feature “ruthless, all out gun battles” and lets players use pistols and rifles to “unleash lethal combos” and “gun down multiple enemies in split seconds.” Players will also be able to choose specific gun fighting skills and “develop and acquire new shooting abilities to become the West’s finest gunslinger.”

Ubisoft hinted at a new Call of Juarez just yesterday via a teaser image. This will be the fourth game in the franchise, following Call of Juarez in 2007, Bound in Blood in 2009 and The Cartel in 2011.

No additional details on Call of Juarez: Gunslinger have been released, but keep an eye on the franchise’s official Facebook page for more info.

We Came. We Saw. We ShootMania'd at PAX.

The IGN ProLeague was at PAX in Seattle, Washington all last weekend showing off Nadeo and Ubisoft's newest competitive first person shooter title: ShootMania. The weekend was packed with a ton of FPS eSports action. We had North America's best ShootMania team, ESP, along with SK.Rapha, EG.nOthing, and Chance in attendance to compete against each other all weekend. Check out our recap below!

Friday

Everything got started early on Friday morning with fans signing up to play with a Joes and Pros Elite mode tournament. After a couple of fun showmatches in SpeedBall and Siege, the Round of 8 in this tournament began. Chance, a former Quake professional player, seemed to pick up the game extremely quickly, knocking out SK.Rapha's team in the Round of 8. In a team kill situaion, we had ESP.Xp3's team advance past ESP.Godson's team in quick fashion. Also advancing to the next round were Area51.PineKone and ESP.Gillz.

Saturday

Saturday contained a lot of demos of different game modes, but the main event was a Best of 7 showdown between ESP, our qualified team, vs Area 51 Gaming. ESP again showed their complete dominance as they won the $750 top prize with an easy 4-0 map score. Area 51 didn't have a lot of time as a team going in to the event, and while they picked up a decent aim with the Laser as the match went along, their coordination was a little too weak to compete with ESP.

Sunday

The true draw of the event happened on Sunday, though, as the event came to a close. After a series of show matches in the Heroes game mode, the Round of 4 and Finals of the Joes and Pros Elite mode tournament were played out. The first match was played out between ESP.Xp3's team and Chance's team, and, despite being a 2-0 in map score for Xp3's team, proved to be incredibly exciting as maps were very close in score. The second match was had ESP.Gillz' team handily defeated Area51.PineKone's team when PineKone was unable to make the match and had to be substituted in for eLe.DarkRabbi. The final score was 2-0 in maps. The finals, though, were outstanding. It was a great setup as teammates Gillz and Xp3 from ESP matched their teams against each other. It went down to the final map, but ESP.Xp3's team was crowned the champion.

Ubisoft: PC has Piracy Rate of 93-95%, F2P the Future

Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot has revealed that the percentage of people who pay in free-to-play games is roughly the same as those who buy boxed games.

So high are the rates of piracy (5-7%), Ubisoft is actively looking to the F2P model as an important way of making money from the PC market going forward, especially in territories badly affected by piracy.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online is one of Ubisoft's latest titles to take advantage of this model.

"We want to develop the PC market quite a lot and F2P is really the way to do it," said Guillemot in an interview with GamesIndustry International. "The advantage of F2P is that we can get revenue from countries where we couldn't previously - places where our products were played but not bought. Now with F2P we gain revenue, which helps brands last longer.

Now with F2P we gain revenue, which helps brands last longer.

"It's a way to get closer to your customers, to make sure you have a revenue. On PC it's only around five to seven per cent of the players who pay for F2P, but normally on PC it's only about five to seven per cent who pay anyway, the rest is pirated. It's around a 93-95 per cent piracy rate, so it ends up at about the same percentage. The revenue we get from the people who play is more long term, so we can continue to bring content."

Ubisoft recently announced a range of F2P titles at Gamescom, including Anno Online, The Settlers Online, Silent Hunter Online, and Heroes of Might Heroes Online.

Is F2P really the future of PC gaming? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Just Dance 4 is set to hit Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii on October 9th. A Wii U version will follow, but since Nintendo still hasn’t revealed that system’s launch date, no release date has been announced just yet.

As previously announced, the game will include a new Battle Mode for going head-to-head with friends, as well as alternate choreographies and an expanded Just Sweat mode. Just Dance 4 will also feature exclusive Wii U features such as Puppet Master Mode, which allows one player to create choreography on the fly, write on-screen dedications and take pictures and videos of friends while they dance.
