Though certainly known for its recent releases like Too Human and X-Men Destiny, the most celebrated game in the arsenal of Silicon Knights is easily Eternal Darkness. Receiving universal praise from critics at the time, including a 9.5 from IGN, Darkness has gone on to be remembered as one of the best GameCube games ever. For a decade, fans have been asking for a sequel, with nothing but vague hints to appease them. Yet according to a recent report, Silicon Knights was in fact working on concepts for Eternal Darkness 2.
In a conversation with former employees, Kotaku unearthed that Silicon Knights had been splitting its time between X-Men Destiny and preliminary work for Eternal Darkness 2. "They were working on an Eternal Darkness 2 demo that they could take to publishers. While I was there, they were even siphoning off staff from my [XMD] team to work on it," one source was quoted as saying. While the prospect of a sequel might be exciting, it would be best not to get your hopes up. Kotaku's sources go into further detail, saying during their tenure at the company, not much progress was made. One even described the demo as being generally very poor, citing "bad tech, combined with a team composed of people who had not shipped a title since Metal Gear... I can't explain why things went so poorly for them [except that] a lot of key people responsible for the original Eternal Darkness are long gone."
Though the fate of Eternal Darkness 2 demo is unclear, we now know Knights was in fact working on concepts for the game - the real question is whether anything comes of it.
