Justice League Dark #13 Review

Hang on to your dog Toto because by the end of Justice League Dark #13 you will most definitely not be in Kansas anymore. Meaning, rising star Jeff Lemire tosses expectations to the tornado wind and delivers a hard-hitting, house-smashing ride into the freaky magic part of the DC Universe. With the Books of Magic on the line, Lemire ups the stakes while smothering his story in enough crazy magic to make the Wicked Witch of the West jealous.

Mikel Janin continues to absolutely kill it on art, this time with finishes by Victor Drujiniu. Together they bring Lemire’s wild script to life with stunning visuals that bring a new visual surprise with each turn of the page. Everything from the lumbering fire troll to the house chase -- yes, there’s a house chase scene -- looks as magical as it does dangerous. A grim overcast covers each page, emphasized by Ulises Arreola’s dreary color palette that saves the brighter hues for the numerous fantastical feats throughout the book.

Lemire has each of his separated heroes face off with their individual threats from last issue, only to be greeted by an even more overwhelming opposition. There are times when the dialogue gets a bit heavy, but it always gets back on track with another unexpected revelation that, like all the good twists, was right there all along if you cared to look for it. If Justice League Dark isn’t on your monthly pull list then add it now, or I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!
